The collective tenure of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady has completely overhauled much of New England Patriots history.

But there’s one long-standing aspect of the franchise’s past that Belichick and Brady have done little to change.

Like those that have come before them, they haven’t been able to consistently beat the Denver Broncos.

In his 12th year at the helm of the Patriots, Belichick is just 3-6 against Denver — his worst winning percentage against an AFC squad. Brady, meanwhile, is an unseemly 1-6 facing the Broncos, including the postseason. Brady against everyone else, by the way? 134-34.

In this regard, they’re far from unique in Patriots history. Bill Parcells? Two losses to Denver by an average of 30 points. Raymond Berry? Winless in five tries. Drew Bledsoe? Two wins in six games.

In fact, New England is 4-17 in its last 21 meetings with the Broncos, dating to Nov. 4, 1984.

On one level, it would seem to make sense. Despite some down years of late, the Broncos have been one of the best franchises in the conference since, well, John Elway arrived in 1982. Denver was really New England’s dynastic forerunner in the AFC, having back-to-back championships in the late 1990s behind Elway and Terrell Davis, ending the NFC’s decades-long dominance of the Lombardi Trophy.

But at the same time, this past decade hasn’t been Denver’s best, and it’s stunning that any team — let alone one that has dabbled in mediocrity of late — can boast this kind of sustained success against this Patriots administration. After all, it isn’t like the Broncos have been piling up 12-win seasons and Super Bowl appearances, like the Colts and Steelers, respectively, in the AFC. Yet New England handles those two teams much better than Denver.

Denver has made the playoffs four times while Belichick has been the head coach in New England, but the last trip was in 2005. One more victory this season would give the Broncos their first winning campaign since 2006, or back when Vince Young was the league’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

       So what gives?

“We just haven’t played very well. We’ve had some very close games against them; we just haven’t pulled it out,” said Brady last week. They’re a good team. They’ve had a good team for a long time — when [Mike] Shanahan was there, and I think we’ve played a bunch of very tight games with them. Hopefully we can start working our way to getting even.”

It’s tempting to pin much of the blame on the difficulty of playing in Denver, what with the trip out west and the thinner air. The Patriots did fly out on Friday, a day earlier than usual, to have an extra day to acclimate to the weather.

“Maybe it’s the mile-high air. Maybe there’s something to that,” said Brady.

But that excuse doesn’t hold much water, not when the Dolphins, Bills and Jets have all won a mile-high since 2009. And not when the Broncos haven’t had a winning season at home since 2007.

“Both teams will be breathing the same air,” Belichick said. “Best thing we can do is play well. We’ve gone out there and played well and won. We’ve gone out there and not played well and haven’t won.”

Denver is the site of Brady’s first playoff loss ever, and Belichick’s first with the Patriots — a game sealed by perhaps the most memorable interception of Brady’s career, when Champ Bailey picked him off in the end zone and returned it to the New England one.

Of course, that was six years ago, and the Patriots don’t suffer the past like a Faulkner character. Asked about his 1-5 regular-season record against the Broncos, Brady didn’t put too much stock in it.

“1-5? Man, that’s pretty bad. Hopefully we get to 2-5 this week,” the quarterback said. “Losing [stinks]; you hate losing, but there’s nothing I can do about those games in the past now. So I’ll just try to win this one. That will make me feel pretty good.”

One of the stranger aspects of Denver’s dominion over the Patriots is its consistency despite the turnover of personnel for the Broncos. Their success against Belichick and Brady has come with different coaches and different quarterbacks. Denver has beaten New England under Mike Shanahan and Josh McDaniels — both eventually fired — and with Brian Griese, Jake Plummer and Kyle Orton under center — all eventually traded or released.

This is a decidedly different Broncos regime, with John Fox in his first season as head coach and Tim Tebow making his first career start against New England. Both bring strong track records — Fox’s just in a larger sample than Tebow’s so far.

“I think it’s been obviously always a tough week to prepare for John’s teams,” said Belichick, who is 3-1 against Fox in his career, including a win in Super Bowl XXXVIII. “They do a good job with their different schemes, give you some different looks, really keep you honest, and we’ve certainly seen that in all three phases this week. There’s a lot to get ready for.”

But the Patriots hope that the changes in personnel for the Broncos lead to a change in their head-to-head history.

“It doesn’t really matter about what happened in other years,” said Belichick. “This is a new team and it’s a new coach out there. They do things differently than they’ve done them in the past, so it doesn’t really matter. They’re good right now. They’re playing well.

“Damn right, they’re a tough team to face. I don’t really think the ’87 team has anything to do with this game, in all honesty. I think it has no bearing on it whatsoever.” PATRIOTS AT BRONCOS TIME : 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. ON TV : CBS (Channel 12 in Providence, Channel 4 in Boston). Jim Nantz play-by-play, Phil Simms color. ON RADIO : WBZ-FM (98.5), WPRO (630 AM), WEAN (99.7 FM), WSAR (1480 AM), WBSM (1420 AM). WEATHER : Sunny, 49 degrees. ALL-TIME SERIES : Denver leads, 27-16, including postseason. The Patriots are 8-18 in Denver. NOTEWORTHY : Tim Tebow is the 11th different quarterback to start for the Broncos since John Elway retired in 1999. Elway was 10-0 against New England in his career; the Broncos are 5-4 against the Pats since Elway retired.

The New England Patriots travel to Denver to face off with the Broncos on Sunday. The Patriots will attempt to extend their current five-game winning streak; with a high powered offense that has had to offset their defensive deficiencies thus far. New England head coach Bill Belichick will look to improve on his 3-6 record against the Broncos; as Denver looks to add yet another victory in their march for an improbable AFC West title.

Not only will Bill Belichick have to game plan for the traditional high altitude in Denver, but also the heightened optimism of Broncos’s fans; as “Tebow fever” has a stranglehold on the region. Thoughts of a division title were foreign in Denver back in October; with the Broncos possessing a 1-4 record heading into the team’s bye week. At that moment, head coach John Fox made a decision that would change the team’s fortunes the rest of the way; inserting second-year quarterback Tim Tebow for struggling incumbent starter Kyle Orton.

Since the quarterback change, the Broncos have won seven of eight games; including six dramatic come-from-behind wins led by the spirited efforts of Tebow. The former Florida Gator and Heisman Award winning quarterback has transformed the city of Denver and the league into believers; in spite of an unorthodox throwing motion and less traditional physical running style that has not hampered his, nor the team’s success.

The passing statistics do not begin to demonstrate Tim Tebow’s contributions on the field. While Tebow has completed only 48.5 percent of his passes and 117.3 yards per game, his athleticism and physical running ability has more than compensated for the passing deficiency. With an option offense in Denver tailored to Tebow’s strengths, the lefty as he has amassed 517 rushing years this season; supplementing the NFL’s top-rated rushing offense. Broncos running back Willis McGahee is on pace for his first 1,000 yard season since 2007 with the Baltimore Ravens.

Encountering Denver’s option offense will be a first for the Patriots under Bill Belichick; which presents challenges in itself. The Patriots have struggled in the past when encountering new and unconventional offensive schemes for the first time. Back in 2008, the Miami Dolphins exploited the new “wildcat” offense to shock New England 38-13 in their first meeting. several weeks later, Belichick was able to adjust and respond to the latest offensive fad by routing Miami 48-28. Belichick will not have the luxury of prior experience against an option quarterback that has had success at the professional level.

Tebow’s pedestrian 83.9 quarterback rating is also deceptive; as his performance in the fourth quarter in overtime more than makes up for his early game struggles. Tebow’s possesses a fourth quarter passer rating of 107.9 as compared to a 65.1 rating through the first three quarters of his games this season.

The Patriots’ defensive secondary has been porous for most of the season and has contributed to opposing quarterbacks having season-best performances. Chad Henne, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jason Campbell, Ben Roethlisberger, Vince Young and Dan Orlovsky comprise a lengthy list of quarterbacks who all passed for more yards against the Patriots than any other opponent this year.

The defensively challenged Patriots secondary continues to struggle with injuries as well. Patrick Chung has missed the past five games due to a foot injury; while Devin McCourty and James Ihedigbo struggled through injuries in last Sunday’s narrow victory against the Washington Redskins.

The recent string of success in Denver cannot be solely attributed to the offense, as the defense has become stout and keps games close enough for the late game comebacks to happen. Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil have combined to register 20 sacks for the Broncos this year; while also holding opponents to an average of 16.7 points in their last seven victories. The front seven of the Denver defense will look to apply pressure on Brady in hopes of forcing turnovers.

How the Patriots’ defense can control and corral the league’s latest phenomenon will go a long way in determining the outcome of Sunday’s contest. Getting out to an early lead is no guarantee that the Patriots will win easily; as Tebow continues to demonstrate with his late game heroics. The general belief in Denver is that the team is now a team of destiny. Whether destiny is realized will all be resolved in the thin air of the mile high city.

BOSTON (CBS) – The New England Patriots improved to 9-3 on Sunday with a 31-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but after lackluster first and fourth quarters, the team knows they can do better.

“I thought we did some good things out there today, we obviously have to do a better job of finishing the game,” Belichick said after the win. “That was disappointing. But we’ll work on that; go back to work and get ready for Washington next week.”

The Colts had a 19-play, 67-yard drive that ate up over 10 minutes over the first and second quarter. The Pats limited the damage, allowing just three points on the drive. While it did not hurt in the end, the Patriots want to limit long drives, especially from an offense as poor as the Manning-less Colts.

Burton, Reid Discuss Win On 5th Quarter

The Patriots put their sluggish start in their rearview mirror though, with the offense scoring four straight touchdowns en route to a 31-3 lead. Even the defense was showing signs of improvement, until the fourth quarter hit.

Once the Patriots had their lead, both the offense and defense sputtered. On offense, Brady and Co. had two straight three-and-outs. On defense, they let the Colts nearly get back in it with 21 unanswered points. Colts quarterback Dan Orlovsky was able to shred the secondary in the final 15 minutes, connecting with Pierre Garcon on scores of 33 and 12 yards.

“It’s disappointing. Go back to the drawing board and continue to try to improve. We just have to finish games,” said defensive captain Jerod Mayo, who had his first career interception in the game. “We have to learn how to put two halves together; hopefully we do it next week.”

“We’re not happy with how we finished the game. We got to finish games better, especially down the stretch,” said Matthew Slater, who started at safety for New England. “It’s in all three phases, not just defensively. We’re not happy with that, and we have work to do.”

Inefficiencies in the defense have haunted the Patriots all season, but it is more recent that the offense has struggled to start games.

“We got off to kind of a slow start, but we picked it up and really got things going and were able to get a good lead. From there, we have to finish a lot better than we have in the last few weeks,” said receiver Wes Welker. “I’m sure it’s going to be a huge emphasis by coach as something we have to do.”

Highs & Lows: Not A Full Effort From Pats

While the score is all that matters in the end, the Colts had more first downs (26), passing yards (338), and rushing yards (99) than New England.

“If we don’t play four quarters, we’re not going to end up in the situation that we want to be in,” added Welker. “We have to fight on through, convert on third downs and move the ball down the field and ultimately score.”

“It’s just not executing,” receiver Deion Branch said of the first quarter struggles. “It may be one thing here, someone missing a block, missing an assignment, a mental error here and there. That stuff happens though; it’s all about how you respond the next drive.”

While the Patriots were able to put puts on the board in a hurry once switching to the no-huddle, the most important thing is how they finish. And with a lackluster performance against a 0-12 team, the team is certain they’ll hear about it this week in practice.

“We played good for 45-minutes and didn’t do anything in the fourth quarter,” said Brady, who watched from the bench after the two fourth quarter three-and-outs. “We’ll hear about that tomorrow.”

That’s all for today.

The long connection came early in the second quarter of the Patriots’ 38-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Branch ran out of gas and was tackled at the Eagles 1-yard line, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for the touchdown on the next play. Suddenly, the Patriots had a 14-10 lead and never trailed again.

Branch finished with six catches for 125 yards, one of his best games of the season.

“Deion is a very instinctive receiver,” coach Bill Belichick said Monday. “He has a great sense of timing, of when the quarterback is ready to throw the ball, when he needs to be open, how to get open. Tom, from his position, kind of has that same sense of what the receiver would expect him to do and what he should do in certain situations and that’s almost always what Deion would do.”

The Patriots improved to 8-3, tied for the best record in the AFC. They should improve on that Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts (0-11) visit. New England has scored the most points in the AFC. Indianapolis has allowed the most in the NFL.

So the Patriots, who have dominated their last three opponents, figure to do that again.

Belichick, though, likely will emphasize the strengths of the Colts, not the season-long absence of Peyton Manning.

“Schematically, (the Colts) look pretty much the same as they usually do,” he said. “Obviously, a couple of changes in personnel, but a team we always have trouble with.”

Eight of the Colts losses have been by more than seven points. The Patriots have the passing game to win by a lot more than that.

At the start of the season, Welker and Gronkowski were the big producers. In the first three games, Welker had 31 catches for 458 yards and Gronkowski scored five touchdowns. Branch started off well with 15 catches for 222 yards in the first two games but managed just a total of one in the next two.

Welker leads the NFL with 82 receptions and Gronkowski is tied for fifth with 60 and second with 11 touchdown catches. Even tight end Aaron Hernandez, with 47 receptions, is ahead of Branch’s 45.

But Branch can still help Brady turn a broken play into a big one.

On Sunday, Brady threw for the first time in his career to a wide-open Tiquan Underwood, who had just been signed. The receiver couldn’t latch onto the ball.

“It would have been a tough play,” Belichick said. “It could have been a little better executed all the way around. I thought he ran a good route. The ball was a little inside.”

On the very next play, Brady turned to a receiver he has plenty of experience with — Branch.

The quarterback scrambled to his left as Branch ran 13 yards down the left sideline and stopped at the first-down marker. That’s when Brady pointed. That was Branch’s cue to cut inside cornerback Brandon Hughes, who played more because cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was limited by a knee injury.

Branch caught it at the Eagles’ 45 and nearly went all the way.

“It wasn’t a play that I made,” he said. “It was a play that (Brady) made with his feet.”

Brady isn’t known for his speed, but he’s good at escaping the rush.

“I think just about anybody who would evaluate Tom would say he’s probably got as good a pocket presence as just about any quarterback,” Belichick said. “He has very good pocket awareness and quickness in the pocket in a short space. I think that’s one of his big strengths.”

Brady and Branch were teammates for five years before the receiver was traded to the Seattle Seahawks before the 2006 season in a contract dispute. The Patriots reacquired him after their fourth game last year and he finished with 48 catches for 706 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games for them.

“You have two smart guys, both very instinctive players, that if something comes up that you haven’t done or talked about before, I’d say both of them probably would do the right thing,” Belichick said. “Or what you would want them to do if you haven’t told them what to do.

“Certainly, the experience and reps they’ve had together (in) practice, games and walkthroughs and talking about situations and talking about things that come up, I’m sure that’s all added to it. And of course, actually going out there and doing it on the field in live game situations, under pressure, adds to it as well.”

The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots have been the gold standards of the NFL since about 2000. Of course, Eagles fans like myself know that grouping the Birds with the Patriots is problematic, given the differences in Super Bowl rings. However, Philadelphia and New England have each been perennial contenders for over a decade, despite the different end results.

Sooner or later, the Eagles and Patriots will stop making the playoffs and dreaming of Super Bowls, especially once their constants finally leave. Yet since the end of an era appears to be closer for Philadelphia than New England, it is another bit of proof at how the Patriots’ dynasty has towered over the Eagles’.

The Birds have tried for over 10 years to win a championship under Andy Reid. But as it stands now, they have kept regressing and it has bottomed out with a 4-6 start to the season. A loss to the Patriots on Nov. 27 will likely kill any hope left for Philadelphia and put Reid further out onto the chopping block. That will hasten the end of an era defined by disappointment and near misses.

While the end of the Reid tenure is near – at least if fans have anything to say about it – the end of the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady(notes) era is nowhere near in sight in New England. In fact, while the Eagles have lost most of their old leaders and may be about to dump Reid, the Patriots have kept Brady and Belichick around and have thrived even when they’ve changed the supporting cast.

There is no longer any guarantee that Reid can keep Philadelphia in contention for a Super Bowl. But as long as Brady and Belichick are in New England, the Patriots will always be in range to get another ring. In fact, while the Eagles have crumbled under adversity in 2011, the Patriots seem to have gotten through it and now have a clear path to the AFC East and home field advantage in the playoffs.

Still, just because New England remains a Super Bowl favorite doesn’t meant that it can follow through as easily anymore. In fact, the Pats are starting to build a reputation as a postseason disappointment, as they haven’t won in January since 2008. That kind of run is more fitting in Philadelphia, although at least Belichick and Brady got three rings before they started coming up short in the playoffs.

Maybe that is the big sign of how the New England dynasty is not what it once was. But even though it isn’t what it once was, it is still enough to give the Patriots double-digit wins every year and keep them among the elite. On the other side, the Eagles aren’t what they once were and they can’t even get to .500 with a so-called “Dream Team.”

But Philadelphia and New England have always been different in this way. The Birds’ highs have never been high enough to match the Pats since 2001, so it makes sense that the Patriots haven’t quite sunk as low as the Eagles yet either. Although these two teams have had the same prosperity for over 10 years, it seems that Philadelphia will never have the edge where it counts – yet it would be nice to defy that trend at least on Nov. 27.

BOSTON (CBS) – The CBSBoston sports team makes their predictions for the New England Patriots Monday night matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Andy Gresh, 98.5 The Sports Hub

What will be the most interesting part of this game is the familiarity that the Kansas City staff has with Bill Belichick and the system that they run. They’ve got some pieces in Tamba Hali and Johnson and Brandon Flowers where you’ve got some matchup problems with the Patriots.

Gresh & Zo Whiteboard: Pats Zero Set Offense

But at the end of the day I think they score too much and win 34-20.

Scott Zolak, 98.5 The Sports Hub

I don’t view this as a trap game. The Patriots should roll in this game.

Tyler Palko gets the start, and I like the kid. He was a three-year starter at Pitt, and the ball is going to get out of his hand as quick as he can.

Individual matchups are key in this game: it’s not going to be the Patriots defense against the Kansas City’s offense. It’s going to be who’s covering Dwayne Bowe, who’s going to be covering their tight ends, and who’s going to be watching Jackie Battle when he’s coming out of the backfield?

Bill Belichick will go individual matchups and this is a good test for them because against strong physical receivers, these defensive backs haven’t done well throughout the year. I look for the Patriots if they take control to get up early and put all the pressure on Palko and make it a one-dimensional game, that falls into their hands. Plus, let’s not forget that Romeo Crennel does know this system. He’s been base all year and they have nothing to lose, so look for them to do something exotic on the defensive front and hopefully the Pats will be ready for it.

Steve Burton, WBZ-TV

It’s a Monday night game, need I say more? From here on out, the Patriots need to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. They are already in first place and they have a chance to run the table, starting tonight with KC.

The Chiefs are hurting. Starting quarterback Matt Cassel had hand surgery last week, and now Kansas City has to rely on backup Tyler Palko. He’s a lefty that can throw on the run, so New England needs to keep him in check. And that goes for whoever is back there playing defensive back. it could be anyone now-a-days, just ask Julian Edelman.

Read: Pats-Cheifs Preview

On offense, we saw a glimpse of the old Ocho. Two catches against the Jets, and they were both big. If Tom Brady looks in his direction more, Ocho could catch fire and burn the Chiefs.

Wes Welker should have another big night. He is off Revis Island, and KC’s main focus will likely be on Rob Gronkowski. Gronk is a freak this season, and just killing teams no matter who is covering him.

Brady is back to his old self, an if that continues it could be a long night for the Chiefs.

Levan Reid, WBZ-TV

After predicting the Pats would lose against the Jets, I have eaten some crow and I am ready to predict again. The Patriots should win this game mainly because they are the better team.

Offensively they are playing at home and coming off of a game where they were able to move the ball up and down the field against their rival. And even though they did not run the ball well, they ran the ball and they kept is somewhat balanced. The Patriots will try and do that again.

Read: Levan Reid’s Patriots Blog

Defensively, the Pats broke on through last week. They got a pass rush on the Jets and even after losing Devin McCourty, they were able to keep the defense together. They just may be getting used to having guys move in and out of the lineup. Plus, Bill Belichick is 3-0 lifetime against QB’s making their first start against him.

All Patriots on Monday night.

Dan Roche, WBZ-TV

This is a game on paper that the Pats should roll, but you never know. The Chiefs will keep it simple with Tyler Palko getting his first NFL start, filling in for the injured Matt Cassel. One player to watch because of this is Dexter McCluster. The RB/WR has been a disappointment so far, but Todd Haley may let him loose tonight. If Kansas City can get McCluster or back Jackie Battle going, it will take a lot pressure off their QB.

Stats: Pats-Chiefs Head-To-Head

As for the Pats, they should jump out to a big early lead and then look to give the Chiefs a healthy dose of Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis.

Pats win 33-14

Walt Perkins, WBZ NewsRadio 1030

The Patriots go into this game a little thin at the linebacker position with both Dane Fletcher and Brandon Spikes already ruled out. Under normal circumstances that might be an issue. But with Kansas City’s Matt Cassel done for the season, the Patriots defense will go up against untested QB Tyler Palko. I have the feeling that Bill Belichick will throw everyting INCLUDING the kitchen sink at Mr. Palko to see how he handles the pressure.

On offense, expect the Patriots to used a balanced attack and at some point go to the hurry-up or no huddle offense. No one runs it better than Tom Brady, who goes into the game needing 295 yards passing to establish a league record for most passing yards through the first ten games of the season.

New England finally has a healthy Sebastian Vollmer back on the offensive line. That should bode well for not only Brady but the running backs.

Chad Ochocinco has shown some glimpses that he does, indeed, have a grasp of the offense. Enough, at least, to be a significant contributor and I expect him to have a monster game Monday night against the Chiefs. That would be helpful given that Wes Welker is banged up.

Provided Brady doesn’t go down on the first series, like he did against this team a few years back, look for the Patriots to improve to 7-3 on the season with a solid, 34-16 win.

Tune in to the Patriots-Chiefs Monday Night showdown on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Pregame coverage begins at 5 pm, and after the game tune in to the postgame show on 98.5, and Patriots Fifth Quarter on My TV38.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) It was a surprisingly dominating win over a major rival that had won three straight games. Now the New England Patriots enter the soft part of their schedule.

Only one of their remaining seven opponents has a winning record. And on Monday night the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to start a quarterback against them who has thrown just 13 NFL passes.

But just as the Patriots 37-16 beating of the New York Jets on Sunday night was unexpectedly one-sided, so might a big underdog stun the Patriots, especially if they dwell on their latest success.

“No matter what happened last week, whether we won, lost, at home or on the road or in London, it doesn’t matter. Once that game is over we have to put it behind us,” New England coach Bill Belichick said Monday. “Now it’s about preparing for Kansas City, what they do, what their schemes are, what their players are, what their tendencies are in certain coaching decision situations that we’ll have to make.”

The Chiefs are 4-5 and lost quarterback Matt Cassel to an injury to his throwing hand that coach Todd Haley said could end his season. It occurred late in Kansas City’s 17-10 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Tyler Palko played the last offensive series and was informed by quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn on Monday he’ll likely get his first NFL start against the Patriots.

That would scrap a meeting between Tom Brady and Cassel, his former backup who played unexpectedly well in 2008 after Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opener.

Seems like an easy win for the Patriots, right?

Brady doesn’t think so, despite his team’s 6-3 record that puts it in sole possession of first place in the AFC East. The Patriots started Sunday tied with the Jets and Buffalo Bills, who both lost.

“There’s still a lot of football left to be played. Every team is still going to make improvements,” Brady said Monday on his contractually obligated appearance on WEEI radio. “And some teams are just going to continue to ride out the season and they can start thinking about next year.

“We want to be one of those teams that really starts building and getting better every week. I thought last night was a good step in the second half of the year. But obviously, the week starts again today. We’ve got to move on to the next game and start getting prepared for a team that we haven’t played in a few years.”

Going into Sunday’s games, the Patriots had the NFL’s lowest-ranked defense, a spot they’ve held most of the year. And they were without two key injured players, safety Patrick Chung and linebacker Brandon Spikes.

So safety Sterling Moore and linebacker Jeff Tarpinian got their first pro starts. Both were undrafted rookie free agents this year and Belichick had some concerns how they would perform in key roles.

“What happens when the lights go on, you never really know for sure,” he said. “You have to wait and see that. Jeff has been playing all year in the kicking game, so we’ve seen that. Sterling really hasn’t really had a lot of opportunity to play.”

Both did well, although cornerback Devin McCourty suffered a right shoulder injury when hit by Moore in the first half as both tried to tackle wide receiver Plaxico Burress. McCourty didn’t return and Belichick said Monday he had no update on his condition.

Losing McCourty for any games would be a blow, especially if Chung remains sidelined with a foot injury. They’re the Patriots’ two best defensive backs. Three others are in their first season with the team.

Still, the makeshift secondary played well enough and was helped by pressure put on quarterback Mark Sanchez. Defensive end Andre Carter had a team record 4 1-2 sacks.

“Andre has a good combination of speed and power and technique that he uses,” Belichick said. “He uses all those.”

Linebacker Rob Ninkovich had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

“He was going to that area of the field and then read the play,” Belichick said of the touchdown runback. “It’s kind of where he was going, but he definitely did a nice job of reading Sanchez, seeing the throw.”

The Patriots trailed 9-6 before Brady threw the first of two touchdown passes to Rob Gronkowski with 9 seconds left in the first half. They led 13-9 at halftime and never trailed again.

They had plenty to celebrate after sweeping the season series against the Jets.

Now they play six straight games against teams with losing records: Kansas City, at Philadelphia (3-6), Indianapolis (0-10), at Washington (3-6), at Denver (4-5) and Miami (2-7). They finish at home against Buffalo (5-4).

“It happens every week in the NFL,” Brady told WEEI. “You look up at the scoreboard during the game – or for us, because we played on Sunday night, we saw a lot of those games. And it’s like: `God, how did they lose?’ Or, `Wow, they beat so-and-so.’

“One team one week looks great, and then they play another team. Other than the Packers this year and the 49ers, you really don’t know what you’re getting every week.”

And, Belichick said, “I think every week is a test, absolutely. Last week was a test. This week is a test.”

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots took just half a season to decide they didn’t need Albert Haynesworth.

Two days after he sat out most of the second half against the New York Giants, the Patriots released the defensive lineman they obtained after his rocky two-year stay with the Washington Redskins.

In six games with the Patriots, Haynesworth had just three tackles and no sacks. His last play came in Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Giants when left guard David Diehl blocked him to clear the way for Brandon Jacobs‘ 10-yard touchdown run with 9:10 left in the third quarter.

“We had a lot of defensive linemen active and so they played in different rotations,” coach Bill Belichick said Monday. “Vince (Wilfork) is a guy, obviously, that we don’t want off the field, but the rest of those guys, they can’t all play. One guy plays for a while and then somebody else plays and they rotate.”

Belichick didn’t mention Haynesworth during his regular Tuesday conference call. About 4½ hours later, the team announced Haynesworth’s release. The Boston Herald first reported the news.

On the Giants’ first series of the second half, the 350-pound Haynesworth made some good plays early but got dominated on others. Then, on the sideline after Jacobs’ touchdown run, he and defensive line coach Pepper Johnson had an animated discussion.

“Whatever we talk about as a team during the game or in meetings and all that, it’s between the players and the coaches,” Belichick said Monday.

The Patriots are 5-3, tied for first in the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets, and have been ranked last in the NFL in defense most of the season.

They still have another underachieving high-profile acquisition, wide receiver Chad Ochocinco. They obtained the six-time Pro Bowl player from the Cincinnati Bengals the same day they acquired Haynesworth.

Ochocinco has just nine catches for 136 yards and no touchdowns, but Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien have praised him.

Haynesworth, who missed two games this season with a back injury, wasn’t involved in any public troubles with New England, unlike his two-year stay in Washington.

“He’ll see how we do things around here,” Wilfork said when the trade was made. “I don’t think it will be a big problem.”

After signing a seven-year, $100 million free-agent contract with the Redskins after the 2008 season, Haynesworth feuded with new coach Mike Shanahan in 2010. He skipped offseason workouts because he didn’t want to play nose tackle in the 3-4 defensive alignment Shanahan was installing.

Then it took him 10 days to pass his conditioning test. He lost his starting job and played in just eight games before Shanahan suspended him for the final four because of conduct detrimental to the club.

The Patriots obtained Haynesworth on July 28 for a fifth-round draft choice in 2013.

“Albert has worked hard. I think that it’s coming,” Belichick said after Haynesworth’s first practice with the Patriots. “We’ve got a long way to go, so just take it day-by-day, but I think he’s doing fine.”

Four days before the season-opening 38-24 win over the Miami Dolphins, Haynesworth was upbeat.

“I didn’t do much in D.C. The scheme didn’t fit me,” he said. “Now I can go out there and play and I can get back to what I used to do.”

And last Wednesday he said, “I want to do everything better. I’d like to rush the passer and get after the quarterback more. Instead of just getting the pressures, I want to get the sacks.”

But he was a backup in all six games he played.

The Patriots have good depth on the defensive line with Wilfork, Andre Carter, Shaun Ellis, Mark Anderson, Gerard Warren and Kyle Love. They also recently activated two defensive linemen from the physically unable to perform list, Brandon Deaderick, who has played two games, and Ron Brace, who has played one.

Deaderick “did a nice job in the running game, used his hands well, played with good technique,” Belichick said Monday.

In other moves Tuesday, the Patriots signed wide receiver Tiquan Underwood, cut tight end Dan Gronkowski and released offensive lineman Thomas Welch from the practice squad.

The Patriots originally signed Underwood on Aug. 29 after he spent two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars but released him five days later. Gronkowski had no catches in five games this season. Welch played in three games for the Patriots this year.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects to three tackles in third paragraph.)

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is under fire again. This time a former player is tossing out accusations that the coach paid him to start fights. Defensive lineman Chad Eaton says that back in 1995 Belichick paid him to start skirmishes in practice. Belichick has since denied Eaton’s claim.

Eaton played in the National Football League for eight seasons. In 1995 he was on the Cleveland Browns practice squad, when the alleged payments occurred. He played again under Belichick in 2000 with the Patriots, but no mention is made of payments taking place then. In 2001 he was cut by the Patriots and latched on with the Seattle Seahawks.

Why this is news I’m really not sure. It happened 16 years ago with a totally different team. The fact that Eaton started fights isn’t a big deal, it is a tactic used by coaches for years, payment for the fights is definitely where the problem sits. Still this seems to me to be a non-story.

There is a statute of limitations on many crimes in the United States, maybe we should enact these same rules on accusations in sports. Last week it was Reggie Jackson going on about how Billy Martin used racist language while both were with the New York Yankees in the late 1970s. I guess Eaton should at least get points for not disparaging a guy 22 years after his death like Jackson did.

I lied to you all earlier in this article. I said I didn’t know why this was news, but I actually do. Flogging Bill Belichick and the Patriots is a sport in and of itself on the internet. People get super clever and call the coach Bill Belicheat and think they are the first to have come up with such brilliance. For us Patriots fans that is fine. Our team has won three Super Bowls and, as long as Tom Brady and Belichick are around, there is a possibility of another. So go ahead and pile on it doesn’t matter, everyone hates a winner.

As for Chad Eaton he got his 15 minutes of fame now he can fade back into obscurity. Exactly what he has gained from these revelations I’m not sure, but does anybody really like a rat?

By HOWARD ULMAN FOXBOROUGH — Tom Brady was a skinny, lightly regarded draft prospect. Bill Belichick had a losing record as a head coach

By HOWARD ULMAN
FOXBOROUGH — Tom Brady was a skinny, lightly regarded draft prospect. Bill Belichick had a losing record as a head coach.

Then they joined the New England Patriots in 2000 and made history with three Super Bowl championships.

Now they’re just one win away from another milestone — the most regular-season victories by any coach and quarterback pair since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

What’s the secret?

“I have no idea what it takes. I really don’t,” Brady said. “I think I’m just fortunate to be here for as long as I’ve been here and to play under coach Belichick.”

That winning combination got its 116th victory last Sunday, beating Dallas 20-16 with a last-minute touchdown. It tied Belichick and Brady with the victory total of Don Shula and Dan Marino of Miami from 1983 to 1995.

But surpassing the Dolphins duo will be delayed at least a week since the Patriots have a bye. It could happen on Oct. 30 at Pittsburgh. The Steelers combo of Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw had the record of 107 wins from 1970 to 1983 before Shula and Marino overtook them.

And Belichick and Brady should go far beyond 117. Neither shows signs of slowing down with Brady ranked second among NFL quarterbacks and Belichick guiding the Patriots to the AFC’s best record at 5-1.

It takes a rare mixture to produce such prolonged success — an outstanding coach and quarterback, excellent communication between the two, and a strong supporting cast of players.

“The most important thing in coaching is to analyze the talent that you’ve got to work with and then to put them in a position where they can best utilize that talent,” Shula said. “I had (Bob) Griese, who was a Hall of Fame quarterback, a guy who did a great job for me. But if I would have tried to have Marino pattern his game after Griese, then that would have taken away from Marino’s great talent.

“I think Marino’s the best pure passer that’s played the game. I just feel that when you’ve got a guy with that kind of talent you just give him all the weapons and give him the opportunity to use that talent.”

Brady’s talent wasn’t obvious coming out of Michigan.

He wasn’t drafted until the sixth round. And Belichick had losing records in four of his five seasons as Cleveland’s head coach from 1991-95, leaving with a 36-44 mark.

But Brady got his chance when Drew Bledsoe suffered internal bleeding from a torn blood vessel in his chest in the second game of the 2001 season. The next week, Brady won his first pro start, 44-13 over Indianapolis, without throwing a touchdown pass.

Belichick stuck with Brady even when Bledsoe was cleared to play. The relationship has flourished ever since.

“We have spent, through the years, a decent amount of time together on a regular basis,” Belichick said. “We talk regularly during the week about what’s going to happen, how we’re doing it and then we review what did happen and then we move on to the next stage.

“I think it’s important that both philosophically and from a game management standpoint that the coach and quarterback are on the same page.”

Belichick and Brady have a remarkable .779 regular-season winning percentage (116-33), while Shula and Marino’s was .630 (116-68). But all of them had an intense commitment to work and improve.

Wes Welker has seen that from his coach and quarterback.

“I don’t think there’s been one time when I’ve parked my car here and (Belichick’s) car hasn’t been in his spot,” the NFL leader in catches and yards receiving said. “He’s constantly here trying to help us and make us better.

“And then Tom, he’s Tom and always trying to find a way to do something better, as far as eating,” Welker said with a smile, “more flax seed, or whatever it is.”

That attention to detail underlies Brady’s ability to lead late game-winning drives. He did that last Sunday, getting the ball with a 16-13 deficit with 2:31 left and throwing a decisive 8-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez with 22 seconds to go.

Was there much doubt that Brady would get his 32nd win, including playoffs, in games in which the Patriots were tied or trailed in the fourth quarter?

“The confidence level that was shown on the sideline was something that I was impressed with,” said right guard Brian Waters, in his first season with the Patriots. “Nobody panicked.”

Welker never worried whether Brady would come through again.

“If you ever sit there and doubt it,” he said, “it’s probably not going to happen.”

That confidence comes from repeated practices of two-minute drills. When they occur in a game, the Patriots are ready.

And when the communication between the coach and the quarterback is strong, the offense can click at any point in the game.

“You spend so much time together in the meetings and the practices,” Shula said. “You go through all these different situations so that when that situation comes up in a game, you’re not grab-bagging it. It’s not a total surprise.”

The other 10 offensive players also must do their assignments for a play to work — and for a coach and quarterback to keep piling up victories.

“It’s the ultimate team sport,” Brady said. “Everyone’s trying to play a part in it, whether it’s the coach or quarterback or the tackle or the long snapper.”

But the coach leads from the sidelines and the quarterback takes charge on the field.

And by next weekend, Belichick-Brady could pass Shula-Marino for the top spot.

“You know how special it is because nobody had done it,” Shula said of the record. “You’re just proud of your accomplishment and, if somebody else does it, then you certainly want to give them credit.”

What do you guys think about this.

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots have watched plenty of film of each other. They’ve pored over their own playbooks, probing for ways to gain an advantage.

That’s fine, but there’s nothing like facing each other on the field to get a real feel for their strengths and weaknesses.

And that hasn’t happened in four years.

“We’ve got a crash course going here on the Cowboys,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “I think this would be a lot easier team to prepare for if you were playing them twice a year.”

Instead, they’ve met 10 times in 51 years since 1960 when Dallas entered the NFL as an expansion franchise and New England started as a charter member of the AFL.

Sunday’s game will be the first between the teams since 2007 when both were 5-0 before the Patriots, behind Tom Brady’s five touchdown passes, won 48-27 en route to an undefeated regular season. They finally lost in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants.

Both teams are much different now. The Patriots (4-1) have six active players who were on the 2007 team. Jason Garrett is in his first full season as coach of the Cowboys (2-2).

“We don’t know each other that much, but we’re kind of going into the game the same way. We both have the same kind of look at each other. Certainly, they’ve been a marquee franchise in this league for the last decade,” Garrett said. “They’re a team that everyone in this league has studied over the last 10 years, so even though we haven’t played them, we’ve watched them. … Hopefully, we can gain some advantage that way.”

They may need it to control Wes Welker, who leads the NFL with 45 catches and 740 yards receiving. And running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis is coming off a career-high 136-yard rushing performance in last Sunday’s 30-21 win over the New York Jets.

But the Cowboys have the stingiest run defense in the league and will be rested after a bye week. They are 16-6 after having a weekend off and have won their last five road games following a bye.

The Patriots have their bye after Sunday’s game and don’t want to go into the break with a loss.

“You never want to lose one,” guard Logan Mankins said, “but that would make it tough.”

The Cowboys will have cornerback Orlando Scandrick back from a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for all but the opener. He generally covers the slot receiver, Welker’s position.

“It’s the fastest team we’ve played this year,” Belichick said. “You look at plays and you stop the film and you say, ‘Looks like this is going to be a good play,’ and then it just collapses. … They haven’t given up very many plays, period, run or pass.”

They did in their last game, a 34-30 loss to the Detroit Lions in which they squandered a 24-point, third-quarter lead and Romo threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

“You never want that to happen,” said Romo, who may have better luck Sunday against the NFL’s lowest-ranked defense. “You have to minimize turnovers in key situations. We did that for two of the games and two of the games we didn’t.”

Brady had a different problem against the Jets. He was sacked four times and the pressure is likely to continue against DeMarcus Ware, one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, and a defense tied for eighth in the league with 13 sacks.

“He doesn’t let the pressure rattle him. His composure is not like any other quarterback,” Ware said. “You’ve got to do some things on defense to take them off kilter.”

Brady has thrown six interceptions, but four came in a 34-31 loss at Buffalo. The Patriots have one fumble all season, but recovered it.

“They are always doing everything right,” Ware said.

Not quite, but they have won 19 straight regular-season games at home and scored at least 30 points in the last 13 regular-season games, one less than the record set by the St. Louis Rams in 1999-2000

The last team to hold New England below that total was Cleveland in a 34-14 win last Nov. 7. Rob Ryan was the Browns’ defensive coordinator, a position he holds now with the Cowboys.

That gives them some extra insight into the Patriots, although Ryan is coaching different players.

“If you have an experience where you played against a team before, you certainly go back and watch that game to see if there is anything that continues to relate to what that offense or defense is doing,” Garrett said. “I think we get more focus on what’s happening in 2011.”

The Patriots knowledge of the Cowboys could get a boost from defensive end Andre Carter, who faced them 10 times in the last five years as a member of the Washington Redskins.

“I have made a few pointers,” Carter said, “but I just think as regards to our study, we’ve been just dead on, constantly learning what they’re trying to do.”

Both teams did plenty of preparation for each other long before this past week.

“It wasn’t like we walked in here (last) Monday morning and were like, ‘Who are we playing this week? Let’s go to work on them,’ ” Belichick said.

But once the game starts, both teams must adjust to what the unfamiliar players on the other side of the line of scrimmage are doing.

“They change their scheme based on who they’re playing,” Belichick said. “What we get and what they did last (game) are probably two different things.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.
