Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth’s stay with…

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots released defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth on Tuesday.

Haynesworth, traded to the Patriots on July 28 after a trouble-filled season with the Washington Redskins, was cut after sitting out most of the second half of Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the New York Giants. He had just six tackles in six games, missing two with a back injury.

The Patriots announced the move late Tuesday afternoon. The Boston Herald first reported the news.

New England obtained Haynesworth for a fifth-round draft choice after he spent two seasons with Washington on a US$100-million, seven-year contract. He constantly feuded last season with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and was suspended for the last four games for conduct detrimental to the club.

Asked Monday why Haynesworth missed most of the second half Sunday, coach Bill Belichick said it was part of the regular rotation of defensive linemen.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

The New England Patriots released
defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the Boston Herald reported.

Haynesworth, 30, was acquired from Washington in July. He
had clashed with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan last year, and was
suspended for the final month of the National Football League
season.

Patriots Lose Second Straight in Loss to NY…

Should it be a concern the New England Patriots have lost two games in a row?

On Sunday, November 6 the New England Patriots fell to the New York Giants by the score of 24-20. New York improves to 6-2 on the season while New England falls to 5-3.

The game was as boring as could be going into halftime with a 0-0 tie. At the very least Steve Weatherford(notes) of the Giants and Zoltan Mesko(notes) of the Patriots kept themselves very busy at the end of each drive.

To be honest, before halftime I was strongly considering going to the deli to get myself a sandwich and do some research on who I think will be the next manager for the Boston Red Sox. I would revisit the game sometime in the middle of the fourth quarter. Chances were high that I wouldn’t miss much with the way the first half was played. I’m glad I didn’t

Finally, with 10:09 remaining in the third quarter, points went on the board. Unfortunately it was a Giants field goal by Lawrence Tynes(notes). New York was up 3-0.

Less than a minute later, the Giants went up 10-0 on a 10-yard touchdown run by Brandon Jacobs(notes) after Tom Brady(notes) fumbled and lost the football deep in Patriots territory.

By that point I was seriously regretting not getting that sandwich.

With 5:29 remaining in the third quarter, New England finally got on the board with a 32-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski(notes).

Just 0:32 into the fourth quarter, Brady found Aaron Hernandez(notes) leading to their first touchdown of the game. The score was tied 10-10. The game was starting to get interesting. With 7:08 remaining, New England added a field goal to go up on top 13-10.

It was promising for a game that had already seen too many turnovers. Defense was looking better than last week, but still not spectacular.

With 3:03 remaining in the game, Eli Manning(notes) completed a 10-yard pass to Mario Manningham(notes) for a touchdown. After the extra point by Tynes, the Giants regained the lead going up 17-13.

Less than a minute and a half later, Brady found Rob Gronkowski(notes) for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was made and the Patriots were up 20-17. All Patriots defense would need to do is hold them.

It didn’t happen.

With Just 0:15 remaining in the game, Manning completed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ballard(notes). After the extra point, New York went up 24-20 and that would be the ballgame.

Turnovers and poor third down efficiency cost New England the game. Despite Brady’s 340 passing yards, his two interceptions and his fumble hurt the team. The fumble alone cost the Patriots a touchdown.

New England will have to get its act together by Sunday, November 13 when they hit the road to take on the New York Jets in a division match up. The Patriots, the Jets, and the Buffalo Bills are all tied for first place in the division at 5-3. Halfway through the season they need to get back on track and take control, otherwise a playoff run will be more difficult than it should be.

Julian Edelman, New England Patriots receiver and…

BOSTON, Massachusetts – New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman’s agent says his client will “vigorously” fight a charge that he groped a woman during a Halloween party at a Boston nightclub.

Edelman, 25, was Kent State’s starting quarterback from 2006-08.

At a brief court hearing Tuesday, a not guilty plea was entered for Edelman to a charge of indecent assault and battery.

The Patriots later released a statement from agent Don Yee, who said the charge “will be fought vigorously within the court system, instead of a rush to judgment elsewhere.”

Edelman and his lawyer left court without speaking to reporters.

According to an application for the criminal complaint, police were called about 1:30 a.m. to the club, where a woman said the 25-year-old Edelman had reached under her costume and grabbed her crotch. Edelman denied to police that he groped the woman, but was arrested.

A three-year starter at Kent State, Edelman broke the Golden Flashes’ single-season record for total offense as a senior in 2008. The record had been held by current Cleveland Brown Josh Cribbs. That season, Edelman completed 153 of 275 passes (56 percent) for 1,820 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,370 yards and 13 touchdowns in 215 carries, gaining 6.4 yards per try.

Edelman has returned nine punts for 105 yards and nine kickoffs for 214 yards, and caught three passes for 25 yards this season.

During his three seasons with the Patriots, Edelman has caught 47 passes for 470 yards and one touchdown. He has returned 36 punts for a 13.6-yard average and one touchdown, and brought back 20 kickoffs for a 22.8-yard average.

Leave any suggestions in the comment box.

New England Patriots Top Five Game-Winning Plays:…

Since the foundation of the New England Patriots—formerly the Boston Patriots—in 1960, the franchise has provided exciting football action within the lines.

Included in that long history are several game-winning moments, by running backs, receivers, quarterbacks, kickers and defensive players. Here is a look at five of the greatest game-winning moments in Patriots history.

5. Otis Smith seals the AFC title

Patriots cornerback Otis Smith sealed the 1996 AFC Championship Game by picking up a fumble and rumbling for 45 yards, putting the Patriots ahead 20-6. The score put the game out of reach for Jacksonville, earning the Patriots second Super Bowl appearance with a spot in XXXVI.

4. Bledsoe airs it out

With Minnesota leading the Patriots 20-0 in the second quarter, New England turned to second-year quarterback Drew Bledsoe to air it out. Bledsoe set single game records with 70 pass attempts and 45 completed passes, helping the Patriots get back into the game. He hit Ray Crittenden and Leroy Thompson with second-half touchdown passes, and set up a game-tying field goal by Matt Bahr. In overtime, Bledsoe connected with Kevin Turner in the back of the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown to complete the comeback with a 26-20 win.

3. The Snow Plow Game

On December 12, 1982, the Patriots edged Miami 3-0. The score itself may not be so memorable, but what was is that Patriot coach Ron Meyer ordered the area cleaned by a snowplow. In came Mark Henderson, a work release convict, who cleared a path for John Smith’s attempt.

2. Down the middle

The Patriots got the ball with 1:21 left on the clock at their own 17 yard line at the end of Super Bowl XXXVI. Quarterback Tom Brady(notes) marched the team down the field, connecting on key passes to J.R. Redmond, Troy Brown and Jermaine Wiggins. With seven seconds left, Brady spiked the ball and in came Adam Vinateri, who split the uprights to give the Patriots an improbable championship, 20-17.

1. Vinatieri boots a pair in the snow

Adam Vinatieri(notes) kicked what many call the greatest field goal in NFL history, and added the game winner in what was one of the most exciting games in team history. Moments after the “Tuck Rule ” was learned by football fans across the nation, Vinatieri kicked the game-tying field goal, a 45-yarder throguh the snow, referred by many as the greatest kick in NFL history. The Patriots got the ball in overtime and again turned to Vinatieri, who again booted it through the uprights for the 16-13 victory.

Week 6 NFL Power Rankings: New England Patriots…

Oct 11, 2011 – After dispatching the Jets with relative ease to boost their record to 4-1, the New England Patriots were ranked fifth in SB Nation’s Week 6 NFL Power Rankings.

5. New England Patriots (4-1, LW: 4): Impressive stat: the Pats have scored at least 30 points in 13 straight regular season games. Gotta go back to last year’s loss to the Browns to find the last time they didn’t.

The Patriots have used Tom Brady’s arm and Wes Welker’s elusiveness to keep pace with the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East, though the Bills did win the team’s head-to-head matchup. Brady is on pace to surpass Dan Marino’s single-season passing yards record, while Welker is on pace to break Jerry Rice’s single-season record for most receiving yards.

Last week, Rice showered Welker with praise. (Via the Boston Herald)

“If he should break my record, I’ll be the first to congratulate him,’ Rice told the Herald from Los Angeles, prior to taping “Audibles,” one of several ESPN shows for which he serves as an analyst. “I have met him. I know how hard he works, fighting his way back from a (torn ACL) injury. I’m happy to see him have a lot of success on the football field.” …

“He’s just unstoppable, man,” Rice said. “You cannot cover him with a linebacker or a strong safety. He’s just too fast. And he’s really going to create space and get open. And when you have a quarterback like Tom Brady, he’s going to deliver a beautiful ball.

“It’s the matchups. He’s going to get that separation that he needs to catch the football.”

The Patriots resume play Sunday at 4:15 p.m. against the Dallas Cowboys.

Patriots Defeat Jets: New England Defense Stiffens…

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots were upset that opponents kept piling up yards on them.

They took it out on the New York Jets.

Even without star linebacker Jerod Mayo, the Patriots allowed just 255 yards and held the Jets without a first down on seven of their 11 possessions in a 30-21 win Sunday.

“We said, ‘Enough’s enough,’ and that’s where you make your stand,” said Patriots defensive end Andre Carter, who had seven tackles.

It was a surprising showing by a defense that entered the game last in the NFL with an average of 477.5 yards allowed. And it played without its signal-caller, Mayo, who missed his first game because of a serious knee sprain.

“I think every week we’ve been getting better and better and better (defensively) and today was a good day to get back on track,” defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said.

The Patriots (4-1) never trailed and won their 19th consecutive regular-season game at home. The Jets (2-3) lost their third straight.

“We lost two in a row last year but we bounced right back from it,” Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said. “This is a little different territory. So we’re going to see what a lot of guys are made of on this team and it’s my job to get guys ready to play this next week against Miami.”

BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns and Tom Brady completed 24 of 33 passes for 321 yards, a touchdown and an interception after starting the day with an NFL-best 388 yards passing per game.

“We want to be an offense that can be able to do whatever we want to do, run or pass, and complement our defense,” said Green-Ellis, signed in 2008 as a rookie free agent from Mississippi.

The Jets didn’t do any of that well enough.

Sanchez completed 16 of 26 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns one week after going 11 for 35 for 119 in a 34-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. And the Patriots outrushed the Jets 152 yards to 97.

“I thought we did some good things” on offense, New York coach Rex Ryan said, “but lacked a little consistency, obviously, and you have got to convert on third down.”

The Jets were just 3 for 11 on third down, compared to the Patriots’ 7 for 14.

“They did a great job spreading the ball around,” New York cornerback Antonio Cromartie said.

Before last season’s 28-21 playoff win over the Patriots, Cromartie called Brady an expletive and said the quarterback showboated and pointed at the Jets sideline after a late touchdown during a regular-season game.

But few players referred to the rivalry after Sunday’s game. And the crowd was subdued in a lackluster first half and behaved most of the time as if the Jets were just another opponent.

Brady had another strong day, completing 24 of 33 passes for one touchdown and one interception as the Patriots scored at least 30 points for the 13th straight regular-season game.

The Patriots led 10-7 at halftime and 27-14 after Stephen Gostkowski’s 24-yard field goal with 12:57 left in the game.

Then Sanchez led a comeback by completing 5 of 6 passes for 65 yards on an 85-yard drive capped by a 21-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes with 7:14 left.

But the Jets couldn’t stop the Patriots, who held the ball for 6:12 as Green-Ellis ran 10 times for 59 yards.

“BenJarvus is a great guy to block for,” Patriots guard Logan Mankins said. “He reads the play out, he finds the hole and he won’t fumble.”

Gostkowski ended the march with a 28-yard field goal, his third of the game, with 1:02 remaining.

“Against New England, you’ve got to get off the field,” Ryan said. “They did a great job sustaining drives. You’ve got to give them all the credit. They earned it.”

On the first play of the third quarter, Brady and Wes Welker connected for a 73-yard gain. Three plays later, a wide-open Deion Branch caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Brady on the left side of the end zone.

“I took my eyes off of him,” Cromartie said. “I took one peep. As soon as I peeped, he went the opposite way. That’s all on me.”

The Jets came right back when Joe McKnight returned the kickoff 88 yards one week after scoring on a 107-yard kickoff return. They needed just three plays to reach the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to Jeremy Kerley, cutting the lead to 17-14.

But the Patriots defense never let them catch up.

“That was definitely our best game,” Carter said, “and now we have to continue to get better.”

Mustangs, Sarianides honored by Patriots

Norwood High School’s John Sarianides has been named this week’s New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week in recognition of his team’s 27-14 victory over Natick High School on Saturday, Sept. 17. Touchdown drives on all four of their first-half possessions powered the team to the program’s first victory over Natick since 2005. The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will donate $1,000 to Norwood High School’s football program in Sarianides’ name in recognition of his Coach of the Week selection.

Patriots and Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett, the team’s executive director of community affairs, visited Coach Sarianides and his team on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Norwood High School. The visit and check presentation will be featured on the team’s weekly television magazine show, Patriots All Access, which airs at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 on WBZ-TV in Boston and later on Patriots.com.

This season marks the 16th year in which the Patriots have joined the National Football League in conducting the High School Coach of the Week program, which recognizes outstanding high school coaches and promotes youth football throughout New England. Tippett oversees the program as part of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation’s commitment to youth football initiatives.

“I am thrilled to kick off another season of the New England Patriots Coach of the Week award at Norwood High School with Coach Sarianides and the Mustangs,” Tippett said. “After meeting with the team, I can see that they embody the values of perseverance, mental toughness and hard work. Coach Sarianides did a tremendous job preparing his team, both mentally and physically, for their matchup last weekend. The Patriots are proud to be able to reward his team and Norwood High School with a donation to the football program and we wish them the best of luck going forward.”

At the conclusion of the season, one high school coach will be named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year and will receive an additional $2,000 contribution toward the school’s football program.

In previous years, Tippett has invited the Coach of the Week and senior captains for a visit to Gillette Stadium, but decided to take the award on the road in 2011 so he could visit the schools that benefit from the program. This year is also the first year the Patriots will accept nominations for High School Coach of the Week. Anyone who knows a high school football coach in New England who has a great week or reaches a personal career milestone is encouraged to submit a nomination at nominatecoach@patriots.com.

The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation is the non-profit through which the Patriots support charitable and philanthropic organizations throughout New England. This support comes in the form of direct grants, in-kind donations and player appearances. The foundation assists a variety of charitable organizations and programs throughout New England by supporting their educational, family and health initiatives.

Is This the Year the New England Patriots Get Fun?

What’s going on in Foxboro, Mass.? For years, the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots was where fun went to die. The team, under coach Bill Belichick, perfected a brand of intense, win-at-all-costs football that never won the hearts and minds of casual fans as, say, the New Orleans Saints — a team that won the Super Bowl in 2010, inspired a beleaguered city and pulled off a catchy rallying cry (“Who dat?!”). While the Pats have had some electric offensive teams, they never earned an endearing nickname like, say, the Pittsburgh defense of the 1970s (the Steel Curtain) or the turn-of-the-century St. Louis Rams squads (the Greatest Show on Turf).

But now the two biggest (and by biggest, I mean most ridiculous) “controversies” of the first week of the NFL season are coming out of the Patriots’ locker room, and these kerfuffles, far from damning the behavior of New England players, speak instead to the team’s evolving spirit. This year’s New England Patriots have a chance to be — if you’re reading this, Belichick, don’t gasp — fun.
(See photos of being back on the field after the NFL lockout.)

The Patriots are usually entertaining on the field, and this year promises a bumper crop of points. New England’s offense exploded during the Patriots’ 38-24 win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday night, as quarterback Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes and became the 11th QB in history to throw for at least 500 yards in a game. Wide receiver Wes Welker galloped for a 99-yard touchdown catch, sending his fantasy owners into a state of ecstasy and their opponents into abject despair. The aerial assault compelled the Patriots’ newest acquisition at wide receiver, Chad Ochocinco, (who only had one catch for 14 yards) to tweet the next day: “Just waking up after a late arrival, I’ve never seen a machine operate like that n person, to see video game numbers put up n person was WOW.”

And somehow, for the crime of complimenting Brady on his virtuoso performance, Ochocinco got in trouble — at least with a couple of ex-Pats. Former New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi, now an ESPN analyst, ripped into Ochocinco on a Boston radio station; former safety Rodney Harrison later hit the airwaves to back up Bruschi’s comments. Some excerpts of Bruschi’s rambling rant:

“Drop the awe factor, O.K., Ocho, Chad, drop the awe factor. You’re not a fan, all right? You’re not someone who’s on another team or watching TV. You’re not an analyst. You’re a part of it. So get with the program, because obviously you’re not getting it and you’re tweeting because you’re saying, ‘It’s amazing to see’? It’s amazing to see because you don’t understand it! … Stop tweeting and get in your playbook. … Open your eyes and watch some film. That’s what you need to do. If you’re still in awe, that means you don’t get it because you don’t understand it.”
(See TIME’s video with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.)

Whoa. You won’t find a weirder, more illogical media overreaction than that one. Sure, Ochocinco didn’t produce, but his team did steamroll Miami, and all he did was say something nice about a teammate. Can’t a guy put up a few weeks’ worth of bad numbers before you rip him for a tweet that probably took five seconds for him to write?

Read about a world without Peyton Manning.

That’s all for today.
