Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots (-15, 46)

Offense

Imagine how crazy the Patriots’ offense would be if they even had an average running game. The Pats are putting up 28.8 points per game with a rushing attack that managed just 105.9 yards per game on 4.2 yards per carry – and that’s with teams stacking the secondary to defend the pass.

Tom Brady is averaging a career-best 8.4 yards per passing attempt, but does have 10 interceptions to go along with his 23 TDs. Tight end Ron Gronkowski has 214 receiving yards and three touchdowns over the last two weeks.

Kansas City’s offense is a major question mark as Tyler Palko takes over for Matt Cassel at quarterback. Palko has only 13 career passing attempts and is making his first NFL start. The Chiefs sat 27th in the league in passing offense (182 yards per game) and points per game (15.7) with Cassel in, so Palko has his work cut out for him.

The Chiefs have used Jackie Battle, Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones in the backfield in an attempt to make up for the loss of Jamaal Charles but are managing just 4.1 yards per run.

Edge: Patriots

Defense

New England’s defense sits dead last in the league allowing 412 yards per game – 308.9 through the air and 103.1 on the ground. Starting cornerback Devin McCourty is expected to be out with a shoulder injury, which means Kyle Arrington could be busier than usual. Arrington is tied for the NFL lead with five interceptions.

The Pats defensive line has shown some promise lately and Andre Carter picked up 4 ½ sacks in last week’s win over the Jets. However, the Pats are getting stops on third down just 43.1 percent of the time

Kansas City allows 24.2 points per game, two more per contest than the Pats, but the Chiefs allow only 364 yards an outing and sit 19th against the pass. The big problem is a pass rush that has notched a league-low nine quarterback sacks all season. The Chiefs do sit tied for third in the AFC with 13 interceptions and will need to be sharp.

We’ll give a slight edge to the Chiefs.

Edge: Chiefs

Special teams

The Pats are coming off one of their better special teams efforts in a long time, but has a long way to go yet. New England averages just 20.8 yards per kick return and 9.6 yards per punt, while Kansas City checks in at 22.5 yards per punt and 13.7 yards per punt.

New England’s Stephen Gostkowski has hit 16 of his 19 field goals with a long of 50 yards. Ryan Succop has missed only three of his 15 kicks with a long of 54 yards.

We like the way New England’s special teams unit is rounding into form.

Edge: Patriots

Word on the street

“If we can try to get him off the spot, so that he has to move, that might throw off the timing a little bit, and then if we’re lucky, we might be able to make a play.” – Kansas City defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel on what he wants to do to stop Tom Brady.

”Anyone that is 300 pounds and has to run play after play and doesn’t get a break is going to get tired,” Patriots left guard Logan Mankins about New England’s no-huddle offense.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

The New England Patriots talked to Waters last week and by Monday, one week before the season opener at Miami, Waters was in the locker room preparing for his first practice.

“I had numerous phone calls. It was just about finding a situation that was best for me,” said Waters, a five-time Pro Bowl guard. “It’s a great organization, so why not? The record speaks for itself. It’s a football team that’s a contender year in and year out.”

Waters said he got the call Friday, visited New England on Saturday and reached a deal Sunday.

The Patriots could use the experience on the line, where right guard Dan Connolly has been out since injuring his ankle in the third preseason game. The Patriots also placed center Rich Ohrnberger on injured reserve.

Although he has played mostly at left guard, the Patriots are set there with Logan Mankins, who went to his third Pro Bowl last season.

“I’ve been a fan of Brian’s for quite a while now,” said Mankins, whose locker is next to Waters’ cubicle. “He’s a good player and a good guy so we’re happy to have him.”

Waters said he could move over to the right side if that’s where the Patriots need him.

He is a welcome addition to the Patriots, who need to do everything they can to protect quarterback Tom Brady by keeping the offensive line well stocked. Once the lockout ended, the Patriots re-signed free agent left tackle Matt Light, who will continue to protect Brady’ blind side.

Mankins, a holdout for seven games last season in a contract dispute, has a new six-year deal, and the Patriots drafted Colorado tackle Nate Solder in the first round. By grabbing Waters, New England adds 320 pounds of very experienced bulk to the front line.

“I’m glad he’s on this side,” nose tackle Vince Wilfork said. “I’ll tell you that.”

Waters spent 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs before he was released at the end of July. Waters says it was a mutual parting. Waters also is a member of the NFL Players Association’s executive committee, which kept him busy during the lockout.

He expected to play again, even as teams completed training camp and the preseason with Waters still at home.

“Being home with the family, there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s not a bad thing at all. I was enjoying that time,” he said. “This is what I do. I wanted to play this year and it just so happened that a great opportunity presented itself to me.”

Logan Mankins is now a very rich man (well, he was very rich compared to most of us before, but now just by NFL standards). Mankins’ six-year contract extension with the New England Patriots is worth $51 million.

Mankins will earn base salaries of $1.5 million in 2011; $3 million in 2012; $6 million in 2013; $6.5 million in 2014; $7 million in 2015 and $7 million in 2016, according to the source. (via Mike Reiss, ESPN Boston)

The deal makes Mankins the highest paid guard in the NFL. So far, Mankins has lived up to the hype, providing exceptional protection for Tom Brady ever since he was drafted No. 32 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Mankins was barred from participating in Patriots’ practice until August 4 due to the new CBA, and his status for Thursday night’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is currently unknown.

Logan Mankins isn’t going anywhere for a long time. Mankins has reportedly signed a six-year deal to remain with the New England Patriots on Wednesday afternoon, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Earlier in the day, Patriots owner Robert Kraft had hinted that the team was close to resigning Mankins and that he hoped to have Mankins retire as a Patriot. This extension is not a foregone conclusion, as Mankins held out for half of the season last year, and at was ultimately not expected to resign with the team.

Mankins has played with the Patriots since he was drafted No. 32 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.

It’s been a weird couple years for G Logan Mankins and the New England Patriots. Mankins, a 2005 first round pick, has yet to reach free agency. He was one of those fifth year players who, in a normal year would be a free agent, was restricted because of the uncapped 2010 season.

He sat out for half the season in protest of his deal and, after the season ended, they restricted him again through the franchise tag. Mankins was obviously frustrated.

After all that, and the situation last year, it sounds like Mankins could actually stay in New England long-term. He has already signed his franchise tender guaranteeing him over $10 million in 2011 but Patriots owner recently told reporters that he hopes Mankins will soon be a “Patriot for life.”

Mankins said last week that it’s possible he could remain in New England on a long-term deal. Kraft’s words strongly suggest that something like that is in the works.

One wrinkle in the new rules: because Mankins is a franchised player, the two sides can’ strike a long-term deal only until Sept. 20. After that, they can’t sign him until after the season.

Check out Pats Pulpit and SB Nation Boston for reactions and updates.

There is the quick update of the day.

Fans should be able to see more of Albert Haynesworth at these practices, presuming that the gargantuan defensive lineman continues to improve his conditioning, something that's been a point of contention in his recent past. Beginning on Thursday, newly signed free agents can join the team in practice, meaning that Logan Mankins, Matt Light, Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris, Kyle Arrington and others will finally be able to practice alongside their teammates. The Patriots are hopeful that by that point, BenJarvus Green-Ellis will have reported to camp as well and the team will have a full staff

The Patriots owners and players have had a strong presence all throughout the lockout. The antitrust lawsuit filed by the players against the owners lists two Patriots players – Tom Brady and Logan Mankins – as plaintiffs.

Mankins was reportedly holding up a new deal early on Thursday, as reports surfaced citing that he had demanded $10 million or unrestricted free agency in order for him to sign off on the new CBA.

New England Patriots offensive lineman Stephen Neal’s unexpected 10-year NFL career is coming to an end. Neal, who improbably went from collegiate wrestler to professional football blocker, is retiring, the team announced Wednesday.

The decision does not come as a surprise. The 34-year-old Neal had considered retirement last offseason before re-signing with the Patriots for two years.

Neal’s progression from college wrestler to pro football player was one of coach Bill Belichick’s favorite stories to tell.

Neal had not played football at Cal State-Bakersfield; instead, he was a top wrestler, posting a 151-10 record that included two Division I titles. In 2001, Neal signed with the Patriots as a rookie free agent and Belichick has joked in the past that the team had to teach him how to put on football equipment.

By 2004, Neal broke through as a consistent starter, the balance and leverage he had utilized in wrestling transferring to the field. One of the high points of his career came that season when he was the starting right guard as the Patriots won Super Bowl XXXIX.

In all, Neal played in 86 regular-season games, with 81 starts. He also played in 12 playoff games, starting each of them.

Injuries have been mounting for Neal in recent years. In 2010, he was limited to eight games with a shoulder injury and was placed on season-ending injured reserve Dec. 2. After the season, Neal said he planned to rehab his shoulder injury and then make a decision about his playing future.

Six-year veteran Dan Connolly, who took over Neal’s spot at right guard last season after his injury, is the team’s projected starter entering 2011.

This could be one of several changes for the Patriots along the offensive line, as starting left tackle Matt Light is scheduled for unrestricted free agency and starting left guard Logan Mankins has been assigned the franchise tag.

The New England Patriots appear on the verge of lopping offensive lineman Nick Kaczur from the roster.
Boston Herald reporter Ian R. Rapoport, citing an unnamed source, writes the Patriots have approached Kaczur about taking a pay cut, and Kaczur has declined.

The source told Rapoport the Patriots will have to cut Kaczur if they don’t want to pay him a base salary of $3.4 million.

Kaczur missed last season with a back injury that required surgery in training camp. He was pegged to start at left guard until Logan Mankins’ contract dispute concluded.

The Patriots got along just fine without Kaczur. Mankins came back and earned first-team All-Pro honors and started in the Pro Bowl. Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer was voted second-team All-Pro. Dan Connolly emerged as a quality backup.

Kaczur has been a starter since the Patriots drafted him in the third round out of Toledo six years ago. Left tackle Matt Light was able to play only three games in 2005, giving Kaczur 11 starts at left tackle as a rookie. Kaczur flipped to right tackle the next season and stayed there.

The New England Patriots have placed the franchise tag on All-Pro offensive lineman Logan Mankins, who held out the first seven games of the 2010 season in a contract fight.Mankins was the first NFL player hit with the franchise tag. The move was first reported by ESPN.com.Mankins would earn about $10 million under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement that expires in three weeks. It is not clear whether the franchise tag will be part of the new deal. The NFL players union has called the franchise tag “worthless.”Despite missing the first seven games, Mankins was selected to the Pro Bowl for the third time.Last year, the Patriots used the franchise designation to retain the rights to Vince Wilfork. The designation was later removed when the two sides agreed to a long-term contract extension.Mankins has started 89 regular season games and 10 postseason games at left guard since joining the Patriots as a first-round draft pick out of Fresno State in 2005. He has earned three Pro Bowl honors and has been selected to the Associated Press All Pro team three times.Last season, he earned the honors despite missing the first seven weeks of the season. Mankins joins Hall of Famer John Hannah as the two Patriots’ guards to earn Pro Bowl bids since the 1970 merger.

The NFL’s league-wide game of franchise tagging began Monday, and New England Patriots All-Pro guard Logan Mankins is the first official “it,” according to ESPN.

The move was expected, even though Mankins expressed last week he wouldn’t be happy about it after holding out through eight weeks of the 2010 season. Despite playing only from Week 9, he was named the starter in the Pro Bowl for the third time in four years.

The New England Patriots officially applied the franchise tag to guard Logan Mankins today.

“Logan Mankins is one of the best players on the team,” owner Robert Kraft told reporters last week. “I just personally want to say: I hope he’s with us for a long term, and we’re going to try to do whatever we have to do to make sure that happens.”

The franchise tag for Mankins’ position comes with a one-year tender worth about $10.1 million. By tagging Mankins, the Patriots would have the right to match any offer he receives in free agency or receive two first-round picks as compensation.

The Boston Herald reported the New England Patriots will put the franchise tag on Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins, who sat out seven games last season in a contract dispute with the team. Mankins has gone on record as saying he wouldn’t be happy about receiving the tag.

Guard is one of the lesser-paid positions in the NFL, and Mankins would make about $10.51 million in 2011 as a franchise player, which is the average of the top five salaries at his position last season. In an interview at the Pro Bowl a couple of weeks ago, Mankins said he was pessimistic about his chances of getting a long-term deal with the Patriots.

The New England Patriots are reportedly set to place their franchise tag on Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins.

“I wouldn’t be happy about (being franchised), if that’s what they chose to do, to be dealt that kind of hand,’’ Mankins told The Herald at the Pro Bowl. “But we’ll see what happens. I would never say the door is totally shut. But the way it’s looking right now, I don’t see them trying to keep me, unless it’s with the franchise tag.”

The period to apply the franchise tag period opened on Thursday and ends on Feb. 24. With the collective bargaining agreement coming to an end March 3, nobody is sure whether a franchise tag will have the same stipulations in a new CBA.

Last week, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the team is intent on keeping Mankins. “Logan Mankins is one of the best players on the team,” Kraft said. “I think there has been a little misunderstanding about some things that have been written. I just personally want to say I hope he’s with us for a long term, and we’re going to try to do whatever we have to do to make sure that happens.”

The New England Patriots already had the NFL’s best quarterback, best offensive player and best coach for 2010.

Now they have the best offensive line, too.

John Madden — the actual guy, not the video game — announced the Patriots won the 2010 Madden Most Valuable Protectors Award, an honor established last year to recognize the NFL’s best offensive line.

The award is based on a combination of criteria including O-line stats (sacks allowed, rushing and passing yardage, time of possession, penalties, conversion percentages and red-zone efficiency), fan voting and Madden’s evaluation.

“All season long, these guys proved they had the mental and physical toughness that enabled the Patriots offense to put up impressive numbers on the ground and in the air,” Madden said.

Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia’s boys beat out the other finalists: the Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints and New York Giants.

Patriots left guard Logan Mankins was first-team All-Pro and started in the Pro Bowl despite a contract dispute that caused him to miss the first seven games of the season. Left tackle Matt Light was chosen for the Pro Bowl as an alternate. Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer was voted second-team All-Pro.

The Patriots also endured two significant O-line injuries. Last year’s right tackle and projected left guard Nick Kaczur missed the entire season with a back injury. A bad shoulder placed right guard Stephen Neal on injured reserve after eight games. Dan Connolly was the super sub who filled in at left guard for Mankins and Kaczur and then at right guard for Neal.

The Patriots led the NFL in scoring. They ranked eighth in total offense, ninth in run offense, 11th in pass offense and fourth in sacks allowed.

New England surrendered 25 sacks. Ten of them came in a three-game stretch in October and nine more in a three-game stretch in December. That left 10 games in which New England gave up zero or one sacks.

Pro Bowl left guard Logan Mankins told the Boston Herald on Friday that he thinks “the door is totally shut” on a return to the Patriots. Mankins, a free agent who sat out the first seven games of last season in protest, said the Patriots haven’t approached him about a new contract, and he’d be peeved if they decided to use the franchise tag on him.

This now marks the second consecutive offseason that Mankins has started a public battle with the organization that selected him in the first round of the 2005 draft. When he reported to the Patriots during the regular season, he said he didn’t accomplish everything he hoped by sitting out, but he never again spoke poorly of the organization.

This has got to make for an awkward week in Honolulu, where Mankins, six Patriots teammates and Bill Belichick‘s coaching staff are preparing for the Pro Bowl. Apparently, Belichick hasn’t used this time to convince Mankins to remain in New England.

It would be a mistake for the Patriots to let Mankins walk away. Clearly, they had enough respect for his game to start him in Week 9 against the Browns after practicing just three times, and Mankins was voted as a Pro Bowl starter by his peers despite his limited playing time in 2010.

Without Mankins, the Patriots would likely use Dan Connolly at left guard next season, and that would increase the importance of Stephen Neal‘s decision about his future. Neal, the team’s starting right guard, has one year left on his contract and has hinted that a string of injuries could cause him to retire. Without Mankins or Neal, Ryan Wendell would be the current starter at right guard.

There’s no telling where Mankins would wind up, but the Patriots would have to fear one possibility. The Jets, who might have the best offensive line in the NFL, might be intrigued at the prospects of upgrading their left guard position, which was the closest thing to a weak spot they had up front this season.

Of course, the Patriots could end all of that speculation by locking up their best offensive lineman to a long-term contract. As of Friday, though, those chances look grim.

Should the Patriots re-sign Logan Mankins? Leave your thoughts below.

There is the quick update of the day.
