John Harbaugh says New England Patriots' Super…

Ravens coach John Harbaugh clarified comments he made on a local radio station Tuesday in which he said that Super Bowl championships won by the New England Patriots were “stained” and have “asterisks” because of the Spygate scandal in 2007.

Those comments were made on the 98 Rock morning show in response to a question about the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal and cheating in the NFL in general.

“In the end, everything is brought before the light of day, when it’s all said and done,” said Harbaugh in response to the question about the Saints. “What happens, even the thing in New England, no matter whether those things had any impact on whether they won their championships or not, they got asterisks now. It’s been stained.

“To me, it’s never worth it. You’ve got to figure out ways to use the rules to your advantage, you’ve got to figure out ways to make the most of everything. We’ve got new work rules here as far as what we can do and what we can’t do with our players, and we’re going to make the most of it. What we’re finding is, ‘Man, maybe we can do some things even better than we did before,’ because these rules make us focus more on some things that we didn’t focus on before. You just have to make them work for you. That’s what success is in the world. You have to find a way to do things better than somebody else. But if you’re cheating, in the end, you’re going to get discredited. It’s not worth it.”

By Tuesday afternoon, Harbaugh released a statement via the Ravens clarifying his comments.

“I answered a question about playing within the rules and referred to the perception that the Super Bowl championships won by the Patriots and Saints have a stain. My reference was to the perception out there that came as a result of the league’s actions,” Harbaugh said .

“I could have been more clear that I was referring to those viewpoints. I totally believe that the Patriot and Saint coaches and players earned those championships. [Patriots coach Bill Belichick] and [Saints coach Sean Payton] both know that.”

Harbaugh also acknowledged that he reached out to both Belichick, who he is friendly with and spent time on the sidelines with before a Johns Hopkins-Maryland men’s lacrosse game last month, and former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who was on New England’s three Super Bowl-winning teams in 2002, 2004 and 2005, to explain his comments.

Now an analyst for ESPN, Bruschi questioned Harbaugh’s loyalty to Belichick who called Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti back in January 2008, and suggested that he give Harbaugh, then a special teams coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, a look for the team’s coaching vacancy. Harbaugh was ultimately hired to replace Brian Billick.

“There has been some distortion about what I said. The original tweet indicated I pointed the finger at Bill Belichick and mentioned Bill’s name. I did not,” Harbaugh said in the statement. “I have so much respect for Coach Belichick and the job he does and has accomplished in his Hall of Fame career. I called him to remind him of my respect for him. I also reached out to Tedy Bruschi, who rightfully defended those Patriot players and coaches on ESPN, to tell him that I agree with him that the Patriots earned every victory.”

Harbaugh is certainly not the first person in the NFL to reference the Spygate scandal and how that affects the Patriots’ legacy. In September 2007, the Patriots were caught illegally videotaping the New York Jets’ coaching sideline during a game. They were subsequently fined and docked a first-round draft pick.

If nothing else, Harbaugh’s comments are certain to put even more attention on the Ravens’ prime-time Week Three matchup against the Patriots on Sept. 23 at M&T Bank Stadium. There already figured to be plenty of hype heading into the game after the Patriots knocked off the Ravens, 23-20, in the AFC championship game in January.

The two organizations have been extremely respectful and complimentary of one another over the years. In the days before the AFC championship game, Harbaugh called Belichick “the greatest coach in our league right now” and the Patriots coach returned the favor by expressing his admiration for the job that Harbaugh has done, calling him a “great guy [who] does a good job with his football team.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Bisciotti also have been highly complimentary of each other. However, the relationship between the two organizations will certainly be tested as a member of the Ravens’ coaching staff has now referenced — either directly or indirectly — the Spygate scandal for the second time in a little more than four months.

A couple of days after the bitter loss in the AFC title game in which wide receiver Lee Evans couldn’t hold onto a potential game-winning Joe Flacco touchdown pass and then Billy Cundiff missed an 32-yard field goal that likely would have forced overtime, Ravens kicking consultant Randy Brown went on a Philadelphia radio show and was asked about the scoreboard at Gillette Stadium displaying the wrong down on the final couple of plays of the Ravens’ last drive. The sideline confusion may have factored in Cundiff getting on the field late and rushing the kick.

Asked if the Patriots did it on purpose, Brown said, “I don’t think you can rule anything out in New England, can you?”

Harbaugh later dismissed Brown’s comments, saying “any suggestion that the wrong down information was a deliberate effort to affect the outcome of the game is nonsense.”

This time, Harbaugh was forced to defend his own comments after going on the radio show Tuesday morning to promote the upcoming ALS charity run for former Raven and current senior advisor to player developmentO.J. Brigance.

After Harbaugh made his controversial comments, he was asked if he ever felt an opposing team knew what play the Ravens were going to run ahead of time.

“Yeah, I have, but if I say when, it’s going to be like Pro Football Talk is going to blow up and go crazy and I’m going to get accused of accusing somebody of something,” Harbaugh said.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was not present at the media portion of the team’s Wednesday practice as his teammates prepared for their regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Brady, who was seen wearing an ice pack on his non-throwing shoulder after getting hit during the Miami Dolphins game in Week 16, spoke to reporters during media availability and is still expected to play on Sunday.

The Patriots were also without offensive linemen Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer during the media portion of the practice. Houston Antwine mourned by New England Patriots

FOXBORO —

Houston Antwine, one of the Patriots’ top defensive players in their early years, and his wife, Evelyn, have died, the team said yesterday.

Antwine, 72, died Monday in Memphis, Tenn., of heart failure, and his wife died yesterday of lung cancer, the team said.

A member of the Patriots’ 50th Anniversary Team, Antwine played from 1961-71 with the franchise before spending the 1972 season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 142 regular-season games for the Patriots, he had 39 sacks, leading the team in that category during the 1967, 1968, and 1969 seasons, although sacks were not an official statistic then.

“For those of us who grew up watching the Boston Patriots, this is a really sad day,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. “In the 1960s, the defensive tackle tandem of ‘Twine’ and Jim Lee Hunt were as good as any in the league and helped propel the Patriots to the franchise’s first division championship in 1963.

“I loved hearing Houston’s stories about those early days in Boston. It was such a thrill for me, personally, to spend time with the players from that era.

“I am saddened to learn of the deaths of both Houston and Evelyn and want to express my deepest sympathies to the Antwines’ daughter, Regina, and all who mourn her losses. Let us all cherish life and remind loved ones how we feel about them daily.”

Antwine attended Southern Illinois, where he became a multiple sport athlete, a defensive tackle and an NAIA wrestling champion.

At 6-foot, 270 pounds, he was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the eighth round (64th overall) in 1961, then traded to the Patriots before ever playing a game for the Oilers. Antwine became a defensive catalyst for the Patriots, making the all-star team from 1963-68.

In addition to making the Patriots’ 1960s All-Decade team, he was chosen to the all-time All-AFL team.

BOSTON (CBS) – The New England Patriots organization is mourning the loss of Houston Antwine, a member of the team’s 50th Anniversary Team, who passed away Monday night.

Antwine, a six-time All Star in the American Football League, was 72.

Compounding the loss was the news that his wife, Evelyn, also passed away Tuesday morning.

“For those of us who grew up watching the Boston Patriots, this is a really sad day,” Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said in a release. “In the 1960s, the defensive tackle tandem of ‘Twine’ and Jim Lee Hunt were as good as any in the league and helped propel the Patriots to the franchise’s first division championship in 1963. Myra and I had the good fortune of hosting Houston and his wife, Evelyn, at my home just two years ago when we honored the Patriots 50th Anniversary Team. I loved hearing Houston’s stories about those early days in Boston. It was such a thrill for me, personally, to spend time with the players from that era. I am saddened to learn of the deaths of both Houston and Evelyn and want to express my deepest sympathies to the Antwine’s daughter, Regina, and all who mourn her losses. Let us all cherish life and remind loved ones how we feel about them daily.”

Antwine was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the eighth round, 64th overall, of the 1961 AFL Draft, but was then traded to the Boston Patriots before ever playing a game for the Oilers. Antwine became a defensive catalyst for the Boston Patriots in the newly formed AFL and was selected as an AFL All-Star for six consecutive seasons, spanning 1963-1968. His play earned him the highest accolade as he was elected to the Patriots 1960’s All-Decade team and was named to the All-Time All-AFL Team.

Antwine spent 11-of-his-12 professional seasons with the Patriots (1961-69- AFL Boston Patriots, 1970- NFL Boston Patriots, and 1971- NFL New England Patriots) before playing the 1972 season, his final, with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL.

In 142 regular season games for the Patriots, he recorded 39 sacks and led the team in that respective category during the 1967, 1968, and 1969 seasons.

In 2009, the New England Patriots Hall of Fame nomination committee selected Antwine as one of three Patriots alumni most deserving for the team’s Hall of Fame induction.

Miami Dolphins are better equipped to beat New…

By DAVID J. NEAL The Miami Herald

Back when they shared a stadium with the Marlins, with a different starting quarterback under a different coach, the Dolphins opened this season by getting into a shootout with New England.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady brought a bigger gun than Chad Henne, more bullets in Wes Welker and a pair of three-syllable surnamed tight ends and strafed the Dolphins to a near-NFL record degree. The damage got cornerback Benny Sapp cut and started the boulder rolling down the hill on both the season and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano’s employment.

The offense never would be better in the first seven games. And it was 14 points short of being good enough.

Now, the Dolphins come at the Patriots with quarterback Matt Moore and more elements not in play the first time around — running back Reggie Bush making opponents look like Oregon State, wide receiver Brandon Marshall making more than pedestrian plays and a better red zone offense. That last part is in jeopardy as key red zone cog tight end Anthony Fasano sustained a mild concussion last Sunday in Buffalo and will miss Saturday’s game. But Jake Long, who sat out against the Bills with a back injury, is expected to start against the Patriots barring a setback overnight.

“I would say we have a lot more chemistry [than the first game],” Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess said. “Obviously that first game, you don’t know what to expect. Now, we’ve got a feel for what type of team we are. We know what type of team they are. From that standpoint, it’s going to be a good matchup. We’ve got to come out swinging.”

Keeping up

So, if New England puts up 30 points, which the Patriots have done each week excepting a midseason three-game stretch, the Dolphins think they can keep pace.

The Dolphins rolled up 488 yards of offense, picked up 25 first downs and ran 73 plays, all still highs for the season, in the September 38-24 loss to New England. Part of the reason they had so many plays, however, is the Patriots gobbled land like a deep-pocketed developer, averaging 8.8 yards per play.

“We understand we need to outscore them to win the game, which is kind of a ‘duh’ answer,” Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline said. “But you are kind of going against their offense.

“Overall, as an offense, we take care of playing their defense and leave it at that,” Hartline continued. “We have faith in our defense if we score points, our defense will do a good job of stopping them, at least limiting them.”

Hartline said he thought the running game made the most strides this season since the first game. Everybody knows the run-the-ball, shrink-the-number-of-possessions, keep-Brady-on-the-sideline theory. With Bush just 27 yards from his first 1,000-yard season and backed up ably by rookie Daniel Thomas’ more muscular style, the Dolphins can do that.

Back in September, neither runner was a factor. Bush, in his first game with the Dolphins, ran for 38 yards on 11 carries. Thomas didn’t play with an injured hamstring.

“I think the first game was obviously we dug a pretty deep hole for ourselves. Obviously, naturally we had to get some quick scores. Our game plan is going to be a little different. In that respect I think we’re not going to try to dig a deep hole again,” Bush laughed. “I think we’re just going to go out there and play Dolphin football. Obviously, we’re going to run the ball. That’s what we do. That’s what we love to do and that’s what we pride ourselves in. I don’t think that’s any secret.”

Points important

Then again, look at the Dolphins averages per run — 6.7 last week against Buffalo, 4.2 in a loss to Philadelphia, 4.8 against Oakland — and it’s not as if they’re not capable of the home run play via the ground. And, they’ll gladly forsake possession for points.

“They’re going to get some plays, but in a toe-to-toe game, our defense will take care of their offense,” Hartline said. “So, it’s scoring the points to back up our defense.”

NFL: Season over for New England Patriots’ Andre…

The New England Patriots placed defensive end Andre Carter on injured reserve Tuesday, ending the season of the team’s sacks leader.

Carter has 10 sacks for a Patriots defense that ranks last in the NFL at 414.4 yards allowed per game.

Carter injured his left quadriceps late in the first quarter of a 41-23 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday and was driven off the field on a cart. He had signed as a free agent in August after five years with the 49ers and five with the Washington Redskins.

Seahawks: Wide receiver Mike Williams has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken left ankle Sunday in a victory over Chicago.

Williams finishes the season with 18 catches for 236 yards and one touchdown, after having 65 receptions a year ago.

The Seahawks host the 49ers on Saturday.

Titans: Running back Chris Johnson (ankle) sat out practice but said he expects to play Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cowboys: Running back Felix Jones missed practice because of hamstring tightness.

If Jones is unable to play Saturday against Philadelphia, Sammy Morris probably would start.

Colts: Quarterback Peyton Manning, who continues to recover from neck surgery, will not participate in practices the rest of the season. Indianapolis doesn’t want to take away practice snaps from Dan Orlovsky or Curtis

Painter.

Giants: Authorities in Gadsden, Ala., are investigating reports that linebacker Michael Boley physically abused his 5-year-old son. The allegations were made by the child’s mother.

League: The NFL will require teams to place certified athletic trainers in the press box to help monitor head injuries, a change prompted by the Cleveland Browns’ failure to test quarterback Colt McCoy for a concussion.

Gault sued: Federal regulators sued former Los Angeles Raiders wide receiver Willie Gault and five others, accusing them of taking part in a scam to artificially inflate the stock of a heart monitoring device company.

What are your opinions.

Denver Broncos eyeing … New England Patriots

New England QB Tom Brady (Denver Post file photo)

For the record: New England is 10-3 and has a two-game lead in the AFC East over the New York Jets (owning the tiebreaker against the Jets).

Last game: The Patriots extended their win streak to five games with a 34-27 victory at Washington. The streak began vs. the Jets and was followed by wins over Kansas City, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.

Who’s hot: Tight end Rob Gronkowski, a second-year player from the University of Arizona, set an NFL record Sunday for most touchdowns in a season by a tight end (15). He had been tied with Antonio Gates (2004) and Vernon Davis (2009) at 13. Gronkowski, who had 160 yards in receptions Sunday, has had at least four catches in all but one game this year.

Who’s not: New England’s defense. The Pats yielded 463 total yards to the Redskins, including a 126-yard rushing day by former Nebraska standout Roy Helu. New England ranks last among NFL teams (No. 32) in total defense, allowing 308.7 yards per game. Only six AFC teams have allowed more points than the 274 yielded by New England.

Key stat: The Patriots have overcome their defensive deficiencies by ranking second to New Orleans in total offense among all NFL teams (319.3). New England ranks second among AFC teams in turnover margin (plus-9).

FYI: With 357 yards passing and three touchdowns against the Redskins, Tom Brady surpassed 4,000 yards for the fourth time in his career and moved into sole possession at sixth place all time with 294 TD passes. He had been tied with Warren Moon at 291.

Coachspeak: “(Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien) and I have a great relationship. … Because you’re a veteran (player), you don’t think, ‘Oh, man. I can’t be yelled at.’ But you can. And you should. We’re all held accountable.” — Brady, on Boston radio station WEEI, regarding his screaming match with O’Brien after Brady threw an interception into the end zone with 6:37 remaining in the fourth quarter vs. Washington. They later chatted and hugged.

NFL: New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski sets…

New England’s Rob Gronkowski set the record for most touchdown catches in a season by a tight end, raising his total to 15 with two Sunday in a 34-27 victory over the Washington Redskins.

The previous mark of 13 touchdown catches by a tight end was set by San Diego’s Antonio Gates in 2004, then matched by the 49ers’ Vernon Davis in 2009.

Gronkowski’s record-breaking 14th score came on an 11-yard pass from Tom Brady with 5:49 left in the first quarter. That capped a two-play, 60-yard drive; the other play of the series was a 49-yard catch-and-run by Gronkowski.

Then, on the opening drive of the second half, Gronkowski caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Brady, dragging linebacker Ryan Kerrigan along for a few steps before breaking free.

“He’s a tough guy to cover, a tough guy to match up on,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Gronkowski, who had six catches for 160 yards.

Dolphins: Quarterback Matt Moore left Miami’s 26-10 loss to Philadelphia because of a head injury.

Moore was hit from behind as he threw an incomplete pass late in the third quarter. He was slow to rise but eventually walked off the field and was replaced by J.P. Losman.

Miami Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jake Long left the game with a back injury in the first quarter.

Titans: Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck hurt his left leg early in the second quarter of a 22-17 loss to New Orleans.

He returned for one play after rookie Jake Locker had the wind knocked out of him, completing a pass, then hopping gingerly back to the sideline.

Hasselbeck was happy with what he thought was a strained left calf rather than an Achilles tendon injury he originally feared after feeling something pop in his leg. He was hurt when his pass was tipped into the air. Hasselbeck ran up toward the line after the ball, then came up hopping without putting his foot down.

Jets: Safety Jim Leonhard was helped to the sideline with a right-knee injury, then carted into the locker room in the second quarter and did not return.

He was hurt after making an interception and being tackled. Leonhard broke the same leg last season.

Goodell on HGH: Commissioner Roger Goodell said he is eager for an agreement to allow human growth hormone testing in the NFL.

“We will hopefully get a resolution to that sooner rather than later. I’m disappointed we don’t have it in place right now,” Goodell said.

The latest collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and union includes a provision to begin testing players for HGH — but it is contingent on the union agreeing to the testing methods.

Patriots’ strong passing game gets a boost from…

The long connection came early in the second quarter of the Patriots’ 38-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Branch ran out of gas and was tackled at the Eagles 1-yard line, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for the touchdown on the next play. Suddenly, the Patriots had a 14-10 lead and never trailed again.

Branch finished with six catches for 125 yards, one of his best games of the season.

“Deion is a very instinctive receiver,” coach Bill Belichick said Monday. “He has a great sense of timing, of when the quarterback is ready to throw the ball, when he needs to be open, how to get open. Tom, from his position, kind of has that same sense of what the receiver would expect him to do and what he should do in certain situations and that’s almost always what Deion would do.”

The Patriots improved to 8-3, tied for the best record in the AFC. They should improve on that Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts (0-11) visit. New England has scored the most points in the AFC. Indianapolis has allowed the most in the NFL.

So the Patriots, who have dominated their last three opponents, figure to do that again.

Belichick, though, likely will emphasize the strengths of the Colts, not the season-long absence of Peyton Manning.

“Schematically, (the Colts) look pretty much the same as they usually do,” he said. “Obviously, a couple of changes in personnel, but a team we always have trouble with.”

Eight of the Colts losses have been by more than seven points. The Patriots have the passing game to win by a lot more than that.

At the start of the season, Welker and Gronkowski were the big producers. In the first three games, Welker had 31 catches for 458 yards and Gronkowski scored five touchdowns. Branch started off well with 15 catches for 222 yards in the first two games but managed just a total of one in the next two.

Welker leads the NFL with 82 receptions and Gronkowski is tied for fifth with 60 and second with 11 touchdown catches. Even tight end Aaron Hernandez, with 47 receptions, is ahead of Branch’s 45.

But Branch can still help Brady turn a broken play into a big one.

On Sunday, Brady threw for the first time in his career to a wide-open Tiquan Underwood, who had just been signed. The receiver couldn’t latch onto the ball.

“It would have been a tough play,” Belichick said. “It could have been a little better executed all the way around. I thought he ran a good route. The ball was a little inside.”

On the very next play, Brady turned to a receiver he has plenty of experience with — Branch.

The quarterback scrambled to his left as Branch ran 13 yards down the left sideline and stopped at the first-down marker. That’s when Brady pointed. That was Branch’s cue to cut inside cornerback Brandon Hughes, who played more because cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was limited by a knee injury.

Branch caught it at the Eagles’ 45 and nearly went all the way.

“It wasn’t a play that I made,” he said. “It was a play that (Brady) made with his feet.”

Brady isn’t known for his speed, but he’s good at escaping the rush.

“I think just about anybody who would evaluate Tom would say he’s probably got as good a pocket presence as just about any quarterback,” Belichick said. “He has very good pocket awareness and quickness in the pocket in a short space. I think that’s one of his big strengths.”

Brady and Branch were teammates for five years before the receiver was traded to the Seattle Seahawks before the 2006 season in a contract dispute. The Patriots reacquired him after their fourth game last year and he finished with 48 catches for 706 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games for them.

“You have two smart guys, both very instinctive players, that if something comes up that you haven’t done or talked about before, I’d say both of them probably would do the right thing,” Belichick said. “Or what you would want them to do if you haven’t told them what to do.

“Certainly, the experience and reps they’ve had together (in) practice, games and walkthroughs and talking about situations and talking about things that come up, I’m sure that’s all added to it. And of course, actually going out there and doing it on the field in live game situations, under pressure, adds to it as well.”

New England Patriots rout Eagles

Rob Maaddi
AP Pro Football Writer

The way Tom Brady was getting everyone involved, it’s a surprise no linemen or linebackers caught passes.

Brady threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat the Eagles 38-20 Sunday in a rematch of the 2005 Super Bowl.

Filling in for the injured Michael Vick for the second straight game, Vince Young couldn’t keep Philadelphia’s fading playoff hopes alive despite throwing for a career-best 400 yards passing.

The AFC East-leading Patriots (8-3) stayed in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the conference behind a surgical-like effort from Brady.

The six-time Pro Bowl quarterback finished 24 of 34, Deion Branch had 125 yards receiving and Wes Welker caught eight passes for 115 yards and two TDs. Brady’s favorite targets, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, also chipped in.

Gronkowski caught his 11th TD pass and Hernandez had six receptions. BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored twice on the ground.

“It was more balanced today,” Brady said. “That’s how it needs to be. You have to run it. You have to throw it to everybody. We did a good job maximizing all the guys.”

The Eagles (4-7) are all-but-mathematically eliminated from playoff contention in a season that began with Super Bowl expectations.

Angry fans made their feelings known about coach Andy Reid, chanting “Fire Andy!” in the second half.

“The way we played, I can understand,” Reid said.

The defending NFC East champions fell to 1-5 at home and have lost eight of nine at the Linc, including a playoff loss to Green Bay last January.
Down 10-0 early, the Patriots rallied behind Brady. New England scored on five of its next six possessions, excluding a kneel-down at the end of the first half.

“Overall we did a great job of staying composed on the sideline and making the right adjustments and doing pretty much what we game planned for,” Branch said.

Brady and coach Bill Belichick improved to 4-0 against Reid’s Eagles, including a 24-21 win for their third NFL title in four years after the 2004 season.

“Tom did a good job really pressing the issue,” Belichick said. “He felt he had them on the run with some of the mismatches. Tom kept pressing it, guys got open and Tom did what he does best, finding the open guys.”
Young led the Eagles to a 17-10 win against the New York Giants last week in his first start in nearly a year. He put up decent numbers against the worst-ranked defense in the league, but couldn’t overcome another inept performance by the Eagles’ defense.

Young finished 26 of 48. It was just his third career game over 300 yards.
“Andy’s a tremendous guy,” Young said, defending Reid. “I have the utmost respect for him. Fans don’t understand some of the situations that goes on during the game. You can’t put it all on Andy. We’re going to always continue to keep fighting hard, playing hard for him.”

Michael Vick broke two lower ribs in a loss to Arizona on Nov. 13. He got hurt on the second play of that game and stayed in, but hasn’t practiced the past two weeks. It’s uncertain whether Vick can play when Philadelphia visits Seattle on Thursday night.

After a fast start, the Eagles fizzled.

Brady engineered a 70-yard drive capped by Green-Ellis’ 4-yard TD run to cut it to 10-7. The Pats converted two third downs on the drive, including two by penalty.

Helped by a missed call, New England’s defense then forced a three-and-out. Young was sacked by Rob Ninkovich, who spun the quarterback down by pulling his facemask. But the referees didn’t see it, eliciting loud boos from the crowd when the replay was shown on the video screen.

One play after just-signed Tiquan Underwood dropped a wide-open pass, Brady connected with Branch for 63 yards to the Eagles 1 on a third-and-13. Green-Ellis scored on the next play to put the Patriots up 14-10.

Antwaun Molden intercepted Young’s deep pass intended for DeSean Jackson on Philadelphia’s next play and returned it 27 yards to the Eagles 34. But the Patriots couldn’t convert the turnover into points. Stephen Gostkowski missed a 39-yard field goal wide right.

No problem for Brady and Co.

The Eagles went three-and-out again, and the Patriots went to a no-huddle when they got the ball back.

Welker blew past the secondary and Brady hit his wide-open target in stride for a 41-yard TD pass to give New England a 21-10 lead.

“He said if he got a certain look he could get it,” Brady said. “Afterward he came to the sideline and said, ‘I told you! I told you!’ It’s nice when they work out the way you talk about.”

Jackson dropped what could’ve been a 4-yard TD pass and the Eagles settled for a 22-yard field goal to get within 21-13.

It was the second time in the first half that Jackson appeared to shy away from contact and dropped a pass across the middle.

Fans let him hear it with a chorus of boos. Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowl pick, is in the final year of his rookie contract and has been unhappy that he didn’t get a new deal. He dropped a deep pass that could’ve been a TD in the third quarter, and was benched in the fourth quarter.

The Patriots got the ball to start the second half and Brady led them into the end zone again, tossing a 9-yard TD pass to Welker for a 31-13 lead.
Brady threw a 24-yard TD pass to Rob Gronkowski to extend it to 38-13 in the fourth quarter. Notes: Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco sat out with a hamstring injury. … Gostkowski’s miss was his second from under 40 yards in 14 attempts. … McCoy has 11 TDs rushing, five shy of breaking the single-season team record held by Hall of Famer Steve Van Buren. … Young’s last 300-yard game was against Arizona on Nov. 29, 2009. He threw for 387 yards in Tennessee’s 20-17 win.

That’s all the news for today.
