Tight end Aaron Hernandez and running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis did not practice on Wednesday for the New England Patriots. Neither player was listed on last week’s injury report and both finished the victory in Denver without suffering any apparent injury.

Hernandez, in fact, had the best game of his season, catching nine passes for 129 yards and one touchdown to help New England to a 41-23 win against the Broncos. Hernandez even ran the ball once, carrying for 16 yards on an end-around.

Since the Patriots held only a walkthrough on Tuesday before Wednesday’s practice, it seems most likely that the two missing offensive starters hurt themselves against the Broncos despite finishing the game on the field. The team was also missing offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer on Wednesday. Vollmer seems likely to sit this weekend for his fourth straight missed game.

Safety Patrick Chung participated in practice for the second straight day. Fellow safety Vincent Fuller, who was officially signed on Wednesday, was present at his first practice with the Patriots, wearing number 26.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will undergo surgery on his foot, a source who’s close to Brady and familiar with his plans confirmed to ESPNBoston.com.

News of Brady’s impending surgery was first reported by The Boston Globe on Wednesday night.

According to The Globe, the surgery on Brady’s right foot will address a lingering issue and will be performed at Massachusetts General Hospital by team physician George Theodore. The report says that Brady may have a screw inserted. If all goes well, he “should be ready for training camp,” The Globe says.

Brady played much of this season with a stress fracture in his foot, but it did not affect his performance in the Patriots’ loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, according to multiple media reports.

Brady was a full participant in three practices leading up to the Jets game.

On Nov. 10, Brady missed his first practice of the season. He was listed that day with a foot injury for the first time on the team’s injury report. From that point on, it was common for Brady to be held out of Wednesday practices, while he was limited in practices the remainder of the week.

Brady was listed on the Patriots’ injury report with a foot injury for the last eight regular-season games and its playoff game but played in all of them.

A league source told The Globe earlier Wednesday that the injury wouldn’t keep Brady from playing in the Pro Bowl Jan. 30 in Hawaii, but WCVB Channel 5 in Boston reported Wednesday night that Brady has pulled out of the game and will be replaced by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel.

In his weekly radio appearance Monday on Boston sports radio WEEI, Brady hinted that he wouldn’t be playing in this year’s Pro Bowl.

“We have exit physicals today,” he said.

Brady added that his shoulder was bruised during Sunday’s loss (“They got me pretty good,” he said), but said that he wasn’t figuring on needing any surgeries this offseason.

Brady had season-ending surgery after he injured his left knee in the opening game of the 2008 season. He played in every game in the 2009 season despite having hand and rib injuries for much of the second half of the year.

Now that the New England Patriots have clinched all they can during the regular season – the AFC East title and home-field advantage in the playoffs – Coach Bill Belichick is left with the one question befitting the No. 1 team in the NFL Power Rankings by The Times-Picayune.

Will he rest his starters in the regular season finale?

A well rested Patriots team would be a potent bunch in the postseason, as it would be the favorite to advance to the Super Bowl. But at the moment, Belichick isn’t revealing his plans.

We do, however, know the plans of the other teams in the Top 5 of the Power Rankings. No. 2 Baltimore Ravens, No. 3 New Orleans Saints, No. 4 Atlanta Falcons and No. 5 Chicago Bears all will have their regulars on the field because they’ll all be playing for playoff positioning.

Here are the rankings:

Brady did not practice, although that has been the norm for Wednesdays over the last two months. Brady is also listed on the participation report with right shoulder and foot injuries, as has been the case for the last couple of months.

The illness might explain why the Patriots pushed Brady’s regularly scheduled news conference from Wednesday to Thursday.

Elsewhere on the injury report, the Patriots specified that guard Dan Connolly sustained a concussion in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers. He earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his 71-yard kick return.

Connolly was held out of Wednesday’s practice along with outside linebacker Tully Banta-Cain (groin), tight end Aaron Hernandez (hip), receiver Deion Branch (knee), defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick (shoulder), defensive lineman Myron Pryor (back) and defensive lineman Mike Wright (concussion).

Defensive lineman Ron Brace (concussion) had limited participation along with outside linebacker Jermaine Cunningham (calf).
